That was for the first copy-protection format, the one used on the Charley Pride CD. This new one may or may not use a different method. With guaranteed refunds, it is worth me trying to rip a disc on my Powerbook...the only audio component I have now that my portable player died.
They mentioned that 3 of the 5 major labels (possibly the most frightening fact in the article...only FIVE?!?!?) are signed on with Midbar Tech. What I wonder is whether stereo component companies like Philips (and other makers of audio-CD only player/recorders) will raise a stink against this. If it becomes widespread, it means major hardware revenue losses for them.
Instead of the soft TFT screen found on all Powerbooks and the new titanium iBook, it had a HARD screen. It was also 800 x 600. :/
That could be a strategy for them to follow, but this *IS* just a recycled rumor, anyway.
This worked for me with Mac OS 9.2.1. It will probably work with other platforms as well.
Set your computer's date a couple years ahead, and open Quicktime, preferably for the first time that day. Reset your date, of course, and voila!
I have not seen the nag screen since.

If only Apple would have known about this....
Spinning 10.1 updater CDs, snazzy music.....
screen blacks out, and a quick little message flashes:
Don't steal software.
KMFDM pulled a similar stunt in the early 90s. They named one of their many singles "SUCKS" and released t-shirts and stickers.
But was it an entirely sarcastic move on their part? Their first concert in Germany did feature 17 vacuum cleaners running simultaneously on stage....
It would have been wise to mention "Windows only" in the piece.
ZipLip meets my needs quite well for now.
