For the rest of the world that doesn't use english, it's completely useless. (and considering that the rest of the world is poorer than the english world, then arguably the cost for disk space relative to silly american is a lot higher compared with disposable income).
We'd all rather have stuff designed exactly for us with the features only for people exactly like ourselves.
But given the choice of using Vi or Word for publishing a complex document, I'd pick Word.
