Actually this is not VOIP, but rather voice over coax. Your telephone call is still using traditional technology at both ends. The NIU at your house converts the POTS signal to RF and then the HDT converts it back at the CO to goto the switch.
Dump Verizon or SBC and go with a CLEC like Cox or Cavalier or... More features and a better price. Choose more than one service and the price gets even better.
Excite @home shutting down affects all @home subscribers no matter who your cable company is. @home provides backbone as well as services such as e-mail, news, webhosting etc...
@home turned off new subscriber provisioning a little while ago untill the cable companies provided more money(extortion). Most cable companies have been working on their own backbone to take over for @home for some time, but they are definatly not going to be ready tommorow! What will most likely happen is the cable companies will pay more money to @home to remain functional until they are ready. If @home does shut down there will be some OC48 facillities being ordered in a hurry.
