    They will. Construction workers, cops, sailors, indian chiefs, banana stand owners, right of way owners, construction equipment mechanics etc. will all get paid.

    And it will only cost $800 Quintillion to actually do the mining and processing! Score! BTW, how much energy will it take? If it takes more energy than is available then once again nothing is gained.

    The 1800's was a very different situation than now. You could send people to the Western US, Australia, Argentina etc. to absorb the unemployed. And before people say "Mars", that is still about 100 years away and likely to be automated.

    Refuse can be dealt with through proper socialization. And probably over 90% of the people I have met on social assistance programs got off of it ASAP. They wanted to control their own lives.

    The civil unrest it causes could make it impractical to automate to that level.

    Should we automate them? Would it be more efficient if you factor in the costs of civil strife and prisons? Probably not. If you look at it in terms of overall impact it would be a very inefficient way of doing things.

    No, if a Free Market is not regulated it becomes a Captured Market. See the unregulated markets of the 1800s and the development of monopolies.

    Ummm... no. For Example the NY stock market has at least 3 layers of regulation; the market rules themselves, the regulations, and the Federal government; and is touted as an example of a good approximation of an free market.

    No free does not mean unrestricted. It means something much more complex than that. Unfortunately the word "Free" is a bit of a misnomer and overloaded in English.

    You beat me to it. Why don't they just pay taxes so the poor and homeless can get their not just their own bananas but perhaps medical care, housing, food, jobs training, etc.

    1) 49 is a big number if you are one of them
    2) Fire fighting, containment, and cleanup exposed some 500k workers to the site. And the actual death toll is probably underestimated: http://www.slate.com/articles/...

    If you watch the documentary there are a number of people who worked on the project who were in bad health. Which could be radiation, heavy metal poisoning, or a host of many other nasty things found in industrial sites e.g. PCBs, Dioxin, asbestos, etc.

    The upshot is that 10's of thousands died fighting the fire and containing and the death toll continues to mount. Score one for safe and clean nuclear energy.
