  1. Re:Chicken and egg if they make me share on Closed Gnutella System to Prevent Bandwidth Hogs · · Score: 1
How are "honest" users (the ones willing to share) supposed to get into the network in the first place?

Simple, download CDEX (it's free), insert CD, rip to MP3, share folder.

Anyone who wants to take from the network should have something to contribute to the network, even if it is the same top 40 crap that 30 billion other people already have.

The problem is, simply, that listening to a nutjob on the street, turning down a pamphlet, etc., doesn't cost you anything monetarily. However, I pay for my ISP connection, I paid for my computer, and if I don't want to read some stupid email about making my penis larger, losing weight with <insert favorite 3 letter acronym here>, etc. I shouldn't have to.

Wouldn't this run into the same problem that the gnutella network has run into? I mean, as has been reported on /. (too lazy to search for the article), Gnutella doesn't scale very well because you have too much burden in handling the peer-to-peer communication. As more people got connected, wouldn't you run out of bandwidth for actual data?

Why is it that if Apple releases a product that only works with their systems without a third party application, everyone says "Oh, well of course. They sell Macs, so why shoot themselves in the foot by making it work with PC's running Windows?"

Now let's flip the situation. Someone makes an MP-3 player, printer, external hard drive, whatever, that only runs under Windows. Now everyone cries "Why don't they port it to Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, Joe's OS 0.001?"

I just want to know why it's fine for Apple to only make their hardware work with their OS, but everyone else should port to everything else?

The thing to realize is that many people running Pro/E are running on HP-UX workstations, so they do have the *nix experience. True, this software has been ported to Windows, but most of these packages (Pro/E, CATIA, Solidworks, Algor) started with roots in UNIX

  8. Another distribution method on Musicnet Fails to Impress Customers · · Score: 1

Does anyone else wonder what would happen if some of the big artists told the record company to go take a flying leap and just distributed their music directly to the fans? I know Steven King tried that once, but just on the honor system (on the internet, HA). But, if they could take credit card payments, paypal (evil), etc., people could download the music and burn a copy of it, or put it on a portable MP3 player, or just play it from the PC.

After all, of the roughly $18/CD, how much do you think that the artist really sees?

How about if subscribers get a 20 minute advantage on posting comments to a story?

I've been wondering about the same thing. Paid subscibers get X amount of time to view and post on stories, then non-paying subscribers (who view the ads, give over a little personal info, etc.) get X amount of time to view and post. Finally, all of the AC's get their time.

Imagine! A world where you don't have to deal so much with AC first post, goatse links, etc. That would almost be a better crap filter than moderation

Then again, if those are fine to use during the flight, then maybe this would be OK too. Any electrical engineers (or IANAEE) care to comment?
