It certainly does seem that Lucas is marketing to the little-girls demographic, but the method is ROMANCE, not pretty boys. I saw the preview a couple days ago - it was gawdawful mush for the most part. Neither Natalie Portman nor that hideous whoever-he-is (Anakin) can act worth a bean. There were some cool fancy space battle moments at the end, but it barely washed the vomit taste out of my mouth.
A recent poll seems to indicate a lot of interest in science articles. Maybe the poll was wrong (what with all the disclaimers etc.)? Maybe people like to read about science but don't have anything to say about it?
Over a year ago I read (somewhere, can't recall) that the producers had decided to see how the film trilogy goes. If it does well, they'll make a movie of The Hobbit.
