  1. Re:Netflix is a Dishonest Company on Netflix Pioneers Industry To Get Left in the Dust? · · Score: 1

Is the intended contrast here that Wal-Mart and BlockBuster are *honest* companies? In NYC I've never seen them take more than a day to receive or send a movie, and they've built a great web interface, which is no mean feat. As an added perk, I'm happy giving my business to Netflix because they don't censor movies.

The United States executes juveniles and the retarded. We detain Muslims. We invade countries then torture their populace. Why is that insightful?
Well, for one because you can be certain that the government, even if the current regime gets considerably more brash than it has been, will not punish you in any way for your statement - the whole free press/speach thing really goes a long way, and I'm not aware of anyone who enjoies quite the same level of protection.

Do we throw our weight around as a superpower? Sure, way too much. Historically speaking, though, barely at all. [Mom, why does so much of the world speak English, French and Spanish?]

    10. Free hemming This doesn't count as cheap labour because only three people service an entire department store. Hm. So all a US Department store would need to do is hire 3 people (US$32,760 salary, plus FICA, etc) per location from the profit on pants....

Now, I was under the impression that aluminium was the material of choice for computer cases because it was the best conductor of heat... so does anyone else see a problem with encasing it in a poor conductor of heat (e.g., wood)?

Right, and there is also the matter of heat. Most fish are not crazy about water much above 70 degrees, so it does not seem wise to add one temperature-sensitive environment on top of another.

  8. Re:Hmm on Alpha Lives! But Who Will Market It? · · Score: 1

Well, if you have a superior product, one that will dominate for a pretty good while, and you have the sole source for it, WTF would you want to sell an inferior, lower-margin commodity product in direct competition with a whole boatload of competitors? well, there is still the applications porting issue - there are few sections of the market where there is enough software available for the alpha to "kick ass" without getting a bunch of ISVs to back the platform. That said, with the excellence of DEC engineering and the excellence of debian alpha alphas make awesome mysql servers or LAMP boxes.
