I'd say the main reason for the bankruptcy was lack of inflation. Worldcom was banking on the value of its infrastructure to rise so that it could continue to act as collateral against its massive debt. Instead the value of its infrastructure fell, partly due to misjudgements in demand, but largely due to the downturn in the economy as a whole. During the boom Greenspan raised rates too much, which kept inflation far lower than expected, something which is good for banks like Greenspan runs, but bad for debtors like WorldCom. He got away with raising rates because the stock market was soaring, however, the stock market was a bad indicator of the economy at the time. No amount of interest rate raises are going to stop a speculative bubble. Greenspan should have focussed on the economy, and let the bubble burst itself (which it did).
The fraud was not the reason for the bankruptcy, the fraud merely covered up the inevitablility of the bankruptcy long enough to take a few more suckers down with it.
Yes, and if you're really worried about liability, you need to register as an ISP under the DMCA.
But if you're going to go through all that trouble, why not go all the way and colocate your equipment at CO. While you're at it you can provide local telephone service for your neighbors as well.
I know of a remote area with about 20-30 house all of which could access a wireless lan connection to share a 1.5 ADSL connection.
Wouldn't it be funny if one of your neighbors agrees to split the ADSL connection with you and then sets up his own wireless network and convinces the other 18 neighbors to split his half with him.
The internet grass movement is called the open source movement.
Yes, open source is a grassroots movement, but it was started long before most of us had internet access. I wouldn't exactly call it an internet movement...

They are currently active in fighting the DMCA and Fritz Hollings' efforts regarding the CBDTPA, and lots more worthwhile stuff.
Blah. If they wouldn't waste their donations on lost causes like the DMCA and (especially) the Felton case, then maybe I'd consider giving them some money. If you want to donate to a cause that actually has a chance of winning in the Supreme Court, try Eldred
If a warrant can be issued to allow a search or siezure, but a search can be initiated anyway (without provocation in the instance of the airline--now carried out by federal employees), then why bother with warrants at all?
It depends on the situation. Rather than get into the long drawn out history, I'll just point you to http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/am endment04/ . While I don't agree with all of the decisions, especially some of the recent drug testing decsions, I think the courts are right in allowing some "reasonable" searches without warrant, and I think this was the intention of the framers.
So? This won't solve either of those problems. Yes, we Americans have become accustomed to lifestyles which are not maintainable. Biodiesel is not going to solve that.
Can it be made any more efficiently than corn-based ethanol? Hempseed or other oil-bearing plants?
I doubt it. It took a whole lot of sunlight over a long period of time to put that energy into oil. I doubt you're going to get the same amount of energy from a hemp which has been collecting energy from the sun for such a short period of time.
The bottom line is that if we wait for a solution, it'll never happen and we'll eventually be buried up to our asses in rusted carparts and used car oil.
I don't buy it. We're using energy faster than the sun can provide us with more of it. There isn't a solution, short of clean fusion/fission. Until then, the only "solution" is to stop using energy so quickly.
If you have a whole lot of time on your hands and have friends in the fast food business, maybe, but other than those couple hundred people, it's perfectly useless.
There are still harmful emissions, and there's not enough fuel available to take a significant chunk out of the current fuel usage. Sorry, this isn't a solution. The only current solution is to reduce the amount of fuel you use, by taking a bus or other mass transit, for instance.
Likewise the government has the right "To regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes," which they can exercise by forcing airlines engaging in interstate commerce to check ID.
As long as all parties involved agree on the value and you never attempt to pass your money off as Federal legal tender, you're okay.
I meant printing counterfeit money, and selling it to others (and telling the people I sell it to that it is counterfeit).
Anyway, I have no idea what you're talking about any more. "You have the right to do absolutely anything you want to, as long as you are willing to accept the concequences." Are you advocating anarchy?
People's right to be secure (in their persons, houses, etc.) shall not be violated by unreasonable searches or seizures. A reason for a search (or warrant) would be probable cause supported by oath or affirmation. The warrant (and/or oath) must describe the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be siezed.
Here's my reading: People's right to be secure (in their persons, houses, etc.) shall not be violated by unreasonable searches or seizures. (A warrant can be issued to allow a search or seizure. [implied]) A reason for a warrant would be probable cause supported by oath or affirmation. The warrant must describe the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
But as I pointed out in another post, the Supreme Court history is available at http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/am endment04/ if you're interested.
When they sell locks that they KNOW don't secure properly 100% of the time, yes.
What lock do you know of that secures properly 100% of the time?
If Spam didn't work, why do I get a hundred pieces of it every morning?
Same reason that VA Software hit 250. Some suckers are willing to invest in things that don't work.
If spamming is basically cost-free for the spammer - why not?
If spamming is basically cost-free for the spammer, then it's also basically cost-free for the recipient. Oh well, there goes that argument.
That's not doing something about the problem. That's hiding the problem. Some of us are not interested in hiding the problem since it solves nothing.
So what's the problem? That people are selfish? I don't think you're ever going to solve that problem.
to turn off the buffer cache.

Technical solutions are the only thing that even stand a chance. In the absence of a technical solution, the problem will continue to go unsolved.
That's fine. I'm just saying the problem is going to continue to go unsolved.

I defy YOU to show me how checking ID's enhances our safety in ANY way.
Fine, but first you show me how having a root password enhances the security of my computer.
it's the fact that he's being ID'ed because of a secret rule that the gov't told the airlines
More likely it's just the airline employees lying. It's not illegal to lie, you know.
