And in reply: 1. How much less could this have been if there were no "piracy"? 2. I think the point here is that people did buy CDs because they heard "pirated" music.
Oh? And how long do you think that this will last before they start charging you? Then you'll be locked into a proprietry product and it will end up costing you more money in the long run!
If Microsoft gurarantees that this will always remain like this, then this will be OK, but of course you have to ask what MS are getting for their troubles. I mean, how can they justify spending $50,000 for absolutely nothing in return? They have to get that $50,000 back somehow!
Hey ppl, if you guys want more pix I discovered the Australian (Aussie paper) has a "Newspix" section. Do a search on penguins and you should get some really cool pics!
Some high-availability (am I using the right term there?) systems actually have uptime requirements (such as "we can only be offline for ten minutes every month") that make it risky to upgrade with every new kernel. Particularly since new kernels can introduce new bugs.
Er, shouldn't that be a dowtime limit, not an uptime limit? There is a subtle difference...
This isn't the way I read it... in fact RMS seems very critical of the X Consortium (and the Open Group, btw). Take for instance the following:
Even if the X Consortium and the Open Group had never planned to restrict X, someone else could have done it. Non-copylefted software is vulnerable from all directions; it lets anyone make a non-free version dominant, if he will invest sufficient resources to add significantly important features using proprietary code. Users who choose software based on technical characteristics, rather than on freedom, could easily be lured to the non-free version for short-term convenience.
. . . In case anyone feels the pressure exerted by the criteria for inclusion in the X distributions, the GNU project will undertake to publicize copylefted packages that work with X. If you would like to copyleft something, and you worry that its omission from the X distribution will impede its popularity, please ask us to help.
Friends, free software developers, don't repeat a mistake. If we do not copyleft our software, we put its future at the mercy of anyone equipped with more resources than scruples. With copyleft, we can defend freedom, not just for ourselves, but for our whole community
Of course, this is the standard RMS line, anyway, and although I don't necessarily agree with all his views he makes some valid points! ----
The quality of the software depends entirely on the owner organization; this can be a problem if the owner organization does not place the same value on quality as the using organization, the owner organization has a different perspective on quality, or if quality resources are not allocated in ways that the using organization needs.
Well, basically the only way MS could "beat" Linux is to make an O/S that is as highly configurable and stable OS. Oh, and it's gotta be free. Now that I think of it, it also shouldn't need to restart every time you need to change your mouse! That's just for starters... I can't see MS ever making an OS like this though. Although maybe somebody who knows what a good OS looks like could improve Windoze!
Without getting hastled? Not that I like them but try going to a One Nation meeting about a year ago without getting mobbed! (in fact I think that most of its members are complete and utter morons- my opinion only, now).
"We'll keep our guns and stay FREE." What sort of nonsense is this? Getting shot at school is NOT an "unfortuneate part of reality"! I do agree, however, that the human race will find new and inventive ways to kill each other. "So we are screwed up a bit in America. That's what makes it the best country (arguably?) in the world." You have weird logic! How does being "screwed up" make you the best country in the world. Besides, have you lived anywhere else but in America? Know one is asking you to apologise for where you are born! America is a great nation, then again, so is Australia, where I live. Maybe not so many people, but that doesn't mean much. Not all American's are arrogant. Just some people. Don't make sweeping generalisations so much.
"why don't you go and buy a fucking holt handbook" - does anyone find this even slightly ironic?
If that's what they are teaching you in English 098 (whatever that is) then you're not getting your money's worth!

This kind of reminds me of a bumper sticker slogan I was told about once:
"Earth first, we'll stripmine the other planets later!".
Er, shouldn't that be a dowtime limit, not an uptime limit? There is a subtle difference...
