Top it in sales or critical acclaim? Yeah some places like Gamespot rated TA higher than Starcraft, but if TA wasn't moddable the game would've been died years ago. TA was sunk by Starcraft due to the tightly integrated Battle.net system. Cavedog put out Boneyards to compete but that was only in the year or so prior to the company's death. Overall though, SC was better recieved by the press. Even then you're looking at a couple fractions of points. Do a comparison on Gamerankings if you need proof. Both are excellent games in their own regards.

That said, TA and SC are two different flavors of RTS. TA and SupCom focus more on realistic tactics, battles and skirmishes than resource gathering. *craft games focus more on base building and other micromanagement tasks I think. I dunno how to explain it really.

This has been long overdue. From what I've read there's a lot more security enhancements in Vista 64-bit than 32-bit. I would like to move over to a 64-Bit windows platform, but the last time I tried it with XP, all my hardware was able to work with it except for Palm who insists on 32-bit drivers. Not sure about iPods either. Palm was higher on the stuff-that-must-work priority list than my iPod at the time.

This also should allow Microsoft to cut back on the size of windows since they, at least in my mind, ought to be able to cut out a good portion of their legacy hardware support (things like the ISA bus and stuff which should not be found on (I hope) 64-bit processor motherboards). Although this will be a very scary version to be running for the first couple of months as hardware manufacturers are dragged kicking and screaming into 64-bit land. Same with software authors. UAC was just a test run ;) Hopefully, they will really just gut the entire OS and start from the ground up this time. Windows has needed a clean break from its history for a long time in my book.

Anybody who pays attention to the screen should be able to figure out to get the car running efficiently without needing to read up on hypermiling techniques (which will help if you want to go beyond some simple adjustments).

So how are other cars faring with the new calculations? I'd imagine it should be proportional to the current numbers?

Spot on with what you said. Like I said. A big F.U. to my intelligence.

"Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, for as panned and reviled as it is by the fanboys, is at least a respectable exercise in filmmaking even if it has few ties to its namesake game series. This stems from the film taking the time to properly introduce and develop characters, make the audience feel for them, make them seem human, and then string events together in a cohesive, meaningful fashion to form that elusive animal called a "plot.""

FF:TSW = Attempt at a real film. Honestly, if they had dropped the FF from the name it would've been better recieved by fans. Critics had a hard time getting beyond the stiff "acting" and visuals. The themes match with the series, but fans are too busy debating Sephiroth vs. Kefka to think about anything remotely thematic.

FF:AC = Fan service orgy. 'nuff said. Also extortion by making the PSP version $5 more. I only suggested watching in Japanese with English subs because watching it purely in English and no subs does not explain the plot very well at all the first time through. Maybe it was second dose of the movie a month later that helped make some sense of the trainwreck, but you shouldn't need a second watching of something like this to make sense of it. I do not appreciate being thrust into a plot that takes place years after a well-known story and expects me to automatically know what has been going on between then and now without any real attempt by the story writers to explain what the hell has happened, even summarily. For some reason without them introducing the trio of bad guys, that I was missing a manual or some document explaining who the hell they were.

Honestly, they should have kept the movie to it's original length (30 - 60 minutes?) and cut out a lot of the crap and fan service (why he hell did we need every player-character to show up in the last 5 minutes of the final battle scene.)

I'd kill to get Carcassonne and Settlers on the Wii. Same with TMNT Arcade, SotN and Worms, among other games. Nintendo really should look into getting PopCap to hop on board as well. I'd be interested to see them pull of a 2-Player Bejeweled game a la 2-player Tetris.

One of the problems the Wii faces is that this is Nintendo's first major foray into areas that Microsoft came in, established, and is currently doing a "2.0" with. It seems to me that the VC is essentially Nintendo in the wading pool with online distribution, they're just trying it out for now. Same with online connectivity. Just be patient is what I keep telling people.

I still haven't explored purchasing anything through the VC yet. I have a sizable NES, SNES and N64 collection but they've got me very close. If the prices were like $1-2 less I would seriously drop the money no questions asked.

And this is why we have the first gaming "drought" all the hardcore players are complaining about. No one expected the Wii to sell like it has, and instead focused on PS3 which was supposed to dominate from Day 1. Fast forward 6 months and we get a drought of Wii games and developers are jumping the PS3 ship. Go figure.

And how is this any different from Nintendo's business strategy from past generations?

  19. Not quite sure I agree with article summary here on Mixed News for Nintendo, Microsoft · · Score: 4, Informative

I don't understand why there's this psuedo-FUD regarding the VC sales by everyone carrying this article. Sales are not down. What he's pointing out is that VC sales have not been growing proportional to the skyrocketing sales of the Wii console.

My guess is that the average user isn't going to care a whole ton about the VC. The hardcore gamer might because they are trying to play games they never got to play before or are trying to consolidate their retro catalog legally into one location. I would be willing to be that the initial buyers for the Wii were in-fact hardcore gamers or previous gamers, not necessarily the soccer moms and grandma's who are now starting to actively seek the system for themselves. These newcomers to the system probably have less interest in the VC than in buying the Wii mostly for Wii Sports and a couple other titles. Finally, anyone who's been following the VC lineup knows that signal to noise ratio hasn't been incredibly high. There's a handful of must-haves on that list, but there's a lot of games waiting in the wings for some reason or other (my theory is to help keep gamers going if there's a big drought of Wii games).

A better description of what's happening is that sales are slowing or plateauing, not "down". I don't think Nintendo and its partners really care anyways. 1.8 million units sold with price tags >= $5 and only bandwidth costs to consider is nothing to scoff at.
