I agree entirely. Master's is the new bachelor's. Where I work, you normally start at the lowest level. Master's gets you at the next level. If you transfer from another company, even if you only worked there for two months, you're a level on top of that. Well, there goes THAT use for my master's. People younger than me with less experience and a BS get paid more at my company in the same job now.
hmm an ear of fresh corn costs $0.25 in season. A can of corn costs even less..
What, unless you are threatening at least a 10x increase in price...
Nah. I don't like messing around with the free market, if that's what you pretend to have. If the price is too high, the free market will fix it. Granted, it may take a few years, but get the government out of it.
I break them easily. When reaching behind a computer it's damn near impossible to tell which way they go in. Sometimes, they DO go in the wrong way. This usually ends up breaking the port, not the cord, which is probably a lot worse.
Maybe I suck at USB cables, but it's the only kind of cable I have to double check for fear of destroying hardware. Cases are never on properly so it's not like it just slides in easily the right way either.
I've always wondered if all black holes do this but we simply aren't able to tell from our perspective. Such as a pen laser, you can't really tell if it's on unless it's aimed at or near your eye, if you can see what it is hitting, or if there is something in the air to illuminate. This would certainly go in line with the theory that black holes can never actually exist. That is, everything that appears to be a black hole is on the teetering edge of becoming one at all times, but constantly bleeds matter so no event horizon can form.
I have no formal education in this stuff nor have I even bothered to read a book, but I'm full of poorly educated gut feelings on the matter!
Assuming they produce viable offspring, isn't that one of the primary definitions for a single species?
I am no biologist. What about Tiger + Lion = Liger? Tigers and Lions don't breed in the wild (geographic reasons, mostly!). A lion is one species, a tiger is another species, and a liger is a third species, all in the genus Panthera.
If anyone would like to educate me on this that's fine, I willingly profess my ignorance in this classification system!
What about a race of loner sentients where the only interaction ever is to mate, and the parents (or parent) to teach, and that's it period. Maybe their biology makes them forget language at all times except while offspring is around to pass it on. Sure, it'd take a considerable amount of time to develop, but it could. I don't see as a giant leap to think about a race who do not directly intercommunicate, but still assist each other by chance/coincidence. Given a billion years, sure, what's to keep them from having a space ship with a million residents with no language to call their own, no communication, and people just fill a role as suits their interests, maybe given by their biology.
I mean gee, perhaps the parents can even implant the morality in the offspring's genetic code, and give them a calling in life. This would be sort of like a cell telling an offspring cell what its role is, and any communication after that is just chemical.
Anyway you could hypothesize scenarios where a drastically advanced race has no real society or culture, or anything we'd consider a society or culture. I chalk up any "it wouldn't work!" claims to the self centeredness that develops for us. I mean look at my description, I'm talking about what they don't have. That's because my view is skewed to our norm and I can't adequately explain something I can't comprehend.
Less than two hours ago I called Comcast and canceled my cable packet. The cheapest HD package I was able to get has been costing me $65 a month for a year. I am in suburban PA. I am aware that Verizon FIOS Internet will be available shortly in my apartment complex, and now I have a slight hope that they will be allowed to provide cable TV as well.
I'd rather purchase a business linkup than have Comcast. The twelve minutes they had me on hold wasn't too bad. The fifteen minutes after that they tried to convince me not to cancel sucked balls, though.
Choice? What if I found out that HP tests their scanning light thingies (I honestly don't know scanner terminology) by creating a tanning salon for hairless guinea pigs that ended up giving them cancer just two years into their natural life? Then to meet my scanning needs AND my ethical needs, I'd have to go to Windows.
They start with a vague hypothesis and little facts and state a shaky hypothesis.
Well, this satisfies a myth then. If what they started with had facts or a sold hypothesis, it wouldn't be (presumed to be) a myth. I haven't seen them test if a feather and a rock will fall at the same speed in a vacuum. My take on it is their whole point is to take on anything with a lot of hearsay and not so much fact.
I don't know how they work behind the scenes, but my guess and hope would be they do a ton of stuff that never airs because it becomes too obvious and/or not fun to watch. That IS their prerogative. They say "plausible" or "busted", but they only mean in terms of their data point(s).
Their methodology may not be perfectly sound, but they never claimed to be any final source of information. To me, they try desperately to look like technologically inclined rednecks. They even grew an extra beard on the show just for that purpose. To take them for anything more.. well.. what do you need, a freak'n disclaimer? "All data collected in this show is just added to the total data collected by anyone anywhere and does not represent any sort of total coverage of any particular topic in specifics or generalities. You'd be a cheese brained fool to take what this show presents to be the truth outside of its own scope and you'd deserve a federally regulated flogging if you apply the data presented to other real world situations. If in any event you use anything you saw on this show to save your life, Darwin will smite you from the Earth with a great vengeance."... would that do it for you?
Our CEO refers to our code as "spaghetti code". I work for a multinational corporation with an engineering base of a few hundred in the US and a hundred or so in India, as well as a manufacturing base of around a thousand (I believe) in East Asia.
The code has been incrementally worked on for at least fifteen years, so yes it is more or less a jumble of sorts. Efforts have failed to make it cleaner, and have actually made it worse. The solution is obvious, and we're doing it now. My point is although our CEO has likely no knowledge of any programming language at all, he knows what our code is like.

No, they'll just do it implicitly along with many other things. Passive aggression serves to antagonize and make others A) feel bad, B) feel bad for feeling bad, and C) Look bad to others when being explicit.
Sorry, when but when I read or hear things implicit, they come out as screaming explicit. That particular conversation would be no less civil if laced with expletives and "your mom" comments.

Do all OS developers become assholes? I've done a lot with VxWorks and I hope I don't become as twisted as these folk. I better just stay away from authoring my own kernel.
I say fraud. I got suckered in by the freecreditreport.com people. TV ad--hell even the URL make it implicit that you will not be charged. Of course the fine print reversed that but I do not think that should be allowed.
I am tired of asshole marketing. I think that implying something untrue, uncertain, or untested in an advertisement should be extremely illegal. I don't see it as being any different than straight lying.
The real reason liberals are against nuclear power as a solution to global warming, rather than carbon taxes, is because, at the end of the day, they just want to steal your money for adding no value to the economy, just like they always do.
I am a liberal.
I am not against nuclear power. Specifically, I think we need to heavily invest in many new nuclear power plants using the latest designs (that is, less to no waste leaves the building).
I don't want to steal anyone's money "for adding no value to the economy". I'm not sure what this means.
Oh well, you're assuring me that I've always stolen money from people "for adding no value to the economy", so you must know what you're talking about.
I do not approve of the lack of transparency and responsibility allowed in business. I do not approve of government waste. That said, I do not trust either sector more than the other. THAT said, I do not trust those who think we should all raise our own food and defend our properties with guns. Basically, I don't anyone who assumes that they should be trustworthy.
Does this (sarcastically implied) belief apply to gun ownership as well?
(But it is illegal to shoot someone until they are dead! Surely no one would break the law! This point is moot!
I know it's a MAJOR threadjack but I'm constantly thinking about my own view on gun ownership. The issues seem very different but we're talking about the same thing: improper use of resources. When do you say that someone can't have it because we fear (assume) something will go wrong?... bah my head hurts.
/if people would stop being assholes then we wouldn't have these problems
Woah, back up. What was my comment in reply to? The suggestion that VI had no mouse. Sure it does, if X is running. Sure emacs has a mouse... if X is running.

How does a government subsidy help in the case of a drought? Given that case, why would market forces not also fix it? Please elaborate.

At work I use dozens of computers, depending on what I'm doing. I don't think I can convince IT to even buy $5 hubs.

Sure liger is a species, it's not called "liger" though. It's called P. tigris × P. leo, or the cross between the two.
Assuming they produce viable offspring, isn't that one of the primary definitions for a single species?

Because a distro that actually has a decent shot has it?
I don't have an idea of how things work, I just wish people would stop putting so much stock on whatever the belief of the day is.
