The record companies must be doing this for a reason. I surmise the reason is because they need the revenue from record sales. If the record companies can no longer make money, then they will disappear.
Will the artists stop making music? Maybe some, but not the dedicated ones. This looks like a transition to having the artists be their own distributor/promoter/etc...
This will of course weed out artists who were doing it for the money, and not for the music. (No more Boy bands?)
I have no problem with big music companies dying...
I was just at Novell's website and saw an article on their groupwise page about how microsoft sent out a document to all of their customers trying to dissuade them from converting to Groupwise from Exchange. The document was full of lies about what groupwise could not do. Novell has a reply to each issue in the document on their website.
It seems that if Microsoft cannot properly compete in the marketplace by making a quality product, they simply lie about the competitions product. Hrmph!
Maybe if the record companies finally have their own solid method of distributing music, then maybe they will stop bothering file sharing services.
I would be more worried about the music causing my fillings to come loose...
Just give me 5 minutes in a room With Gary Gygax and a D20....
