I believe this to be a major contributor to the sense that Linux support is lacking. It's an article from The Register suggesting that Linux support scares away newbies. As a Linux newbie myself, I couldn't agree with the article more. If you know what you're doing, then yes, Linux support is excellent. This isn't the case for a lot of people though. Most HOWTOs assume the reader knows how to do stuff that many don't. I know that's what has kept me from migrating to Linux for my main box. It seems to me that many Linux users are ignorant of this...
