  1. Unreliable sources on Color Palms to Debut in February? · · Score: 2

One thing to remember is that Cnet and Zdnet are horribly unreliable sources for information regarding new Palms and their release dates. If it doesn't come from the mouth of 3Com, and worse, instead claims, "sources say" then pay it no mind. Remember the Razor? That only existed in the mind of ZDnet. (Well, it appeared as the PalmV, but it wasn't nearly as cool as ZDNet made it sound and they were about a year off the release date).

Granted, we now know that we have a (somewhat) color PalmOS (developer release that runs on an emulator), so we at least know Cnet is half right. There will be Color Palm. Do not rely on these online magazines to tell you when you can buy one though...

Actually, you could protectively armour the SlugBot with sharp protrusions, so anyone who decides at the spur of the moment to steal the bot is going to have to get pretty inventive. Also, if the SlugBot were to be carried out of GPS range, it could discharge an exploding pink ink carridge, like used in hoity-toity clothing stores and banks. Better yet, just explode the decomposing slugs all over its assailant. Mmmm...fun with SlugBot theives.

I believe that due to a wacky combination of Xfree, KDE, Netscape, and the allignment of the planets, I was forced to assume my Linux box was rendered frozen a couple times -- and hit the power button. Once I eventually put the machine on my University's LAN, and it happened all of once more, I was able to trot down to a computer lab, telnet into the machine, and kill the processes as root. When I returned to my dorm, all was fine, Xfree had restarted, and KDM was asking for a login: this time (and ever since) I opted for WindowMaker. Love it.

The PalmPilot cannot play mp3's, emulate a gameboy, nor play Phantom Menace trailers. Pssst...IT'S MARKETED AS A TOOL!!!

I think I'm going to cry. I've actually found a valid reason to purchase a WinCE device someday. If not ONLY for the sheer delight in wiping WinCE, as an added bonus, I'd get to replace it with Linux! Boy, would that baffle the MS WinCE propaganda team that visits my campus a couple times a year.

  8. Re:Linux and the Visor/PalmOS/PalmPilot on Good-Bye Nino; Hello from Handspring · · Score: 4

There are a handful of applications that offer syncronization between serial PalmOS devices (Visor will need the serial cradle). There's a buggy K app called KPilot. I believe GNOME also has an incomplete counterpart (of course). However, one of the BETTER Linux-Palm Desktop tools is JPilot. It has a built-in Datebook, To-Do List, MemoPad, and Address Book; all very similar to the Windows Palm Desktop suite. While not necessarily as sophisticated in it's syncing technique (basically copies the entire Pilot databases right off the Plot, rather than updates each database by individual records), it's very reliable, easy to use, and (here's the important part) complete to the point that you can use it on a daily basis. You'll need to install the Pilot-Link tools beforehand, but it's worth it!

The term geek is broadening and evolving daily in YOUR collumns and mind, and is coming to mean every redefined martyr you can pull out of the newspaper or history books.

I'm sorry, but I too, once considered the word 'geek' to be moving away from a negative connotation--this lasted for about 5 seconds. When I started labeling myself as a geek to friends and acquaintences, they were quick to make a sour face and say "Oh no you're not." Geek is still a negative word to the world outside of ./ Katz, no matter how badly you want it not to be.

  10. I Hate Lucas on LucasFilms suing 'net Pirates · · Score: 1

Yes, ripping movies and distributing them on the Internet is wrong. But personally, I have very little sympathy for Lucas or his cause. He deserves this and a whole lot more. Why? Because, contrary to popular belief he, not Jar Jar ruined Star Wars. With his 'digital movie' bullshit, he asked a very talented group of actors to divert their effort from creating dynamic characters toward just trying to act on in an environment that isn't really there. Lucas wanted them to act in front of a blue screen, and what he got was them acting LIKE they were in front of a blue screen. Asshole.
