  1. Steve's master plan has worked. on Office 12 Exposed · · Score: 1

Now that microsoft is hooked on brushed metal, Mac OS X can move to something saner like the theme used in Tiger Mail or iTunes 5.0.
It is also amazing how microsoft UI engineers can twist the aqua/bruhsed metal themes into something that is both ugly and not usable.I bet Steve was counting on that as well.

  2. Do like apple for software downloads on How Can I Trust Firefox? · · Score: 1

Publish MD5 or SHA-1 signatures for the distributed files in a secure (https) web page. That is an easy to implement and elegant solution that solves the verification problem.

  3. We have just stepped into the 21st century on Google Keyhole, Google Scholar · · Score: 1

Search technologies are the future: I have just tried google scholar and in my field (optical model potenitals for nuclear physics) I was able to get most of the relevant references that I have been acumulating for years in a few seconds.
    I am VERY impressed.
I think that search technologies like google desktop or spotlight are going to define the user interface of the 21st century: no files that you have to keep track of, only information that is a search query away from your fingertips.

  4. Re:All Pu is "weapons grade" on Plutonium Shipment to France on the Way · · Score: 1

All Pu is not weapon grade!
Pu is obtained by neutron capture on 238U. The problem is that 239Pu(the usefull one) can also capture neutrons to produce 240Pu that is not as stable as 239Pu and produces unstable/unsafe weapons.
So in order to produce weapon grade Pu the U must be left in a flux of neutrons long enough to produce 239Pu, but it must be taken out before the 240Pu starts to build up. That's why the IAEA inspectors in charge of nuclear non-proliferation track the loading and unloading of nuclear fuel in civilian reactors, to make sure that the fuel stays long enough in the reactor to produce enough 240Pu to spoil possible military usfullness.

  5. PROXY ! on Public Exploit For Windows JPEG Bug · · Score: 2, Interesting

Writting a proxy server that validates or blocks all JPG images going through it, is probably possible. Such a proxy can also process PNG, BMP and other vulnerable formats. This proxy could be run either at
the user level (personal protection) or at the ISP level.

Time to start a new open source project !

is this a step in the right direction for the historically gender-biased institution?"

It depends on whether she was nominated becase she is a woman or because she fits the bill.

Probably a little bit of both.

  7. King of Dragon Pass on Game with God · · Score: 1

King of Dragon pass http://www.a-sharp.com/kodp/ is a game based on the imaginary world of Glorantha http://www.glorantha.com/ in which a lot of religion/religious practice is taking place: sacrifices to gods, re-enacting of myths (heroquests). Moreover it is a pretty good game, ait focuses more on story than on technical achievements, and the images (hand painted) are beautifull. It is very hard to describe this atypical game. Give it a try.
(note that I endorsing this game just because I like it, I am not related in any way to the makers
    of that game)

  8. insert coin ! on Abused, But Working Hardware Stories? · · Score: 3, Funny

On a slot loading Powerbook, my 2 years old son had been inserting coins in the CD slot.
The computer was still working perfectly, but it was making pocket change noises whenever moved.
The coins stayed there until the case was opened for a HD upgrade.
