another +1 for KeePass. I used to do the paper-in-wallet method, but the list grew too long to sit on every day.

  3. In Portland on What is the Tech Jobs Situation in Late 2004? · · Score: 1

I have been looking for work since March 2004, and what I see are primarily Senior-level positions, with nothing on the entry level. Employers saimply have to weigh the 'alphabet soup' on incoming resumes and hire the guy with the most certs. For a guy who's been too busy doing the work to take time out to get the pretty paperwork, it's damned annoying.

  4. Politeness is key on Dealing with Intruders? · · Score: 1

If the attacks are just random script kiddies trying things that will never work, I'd probably ignore it.

If you're starting to see a pattern or an increase in the sophistication of the attack, though, you might want to just send their ISP a polite letter letting them know what you have found and your concerns. After all, what would you want to see if you were the ISP's sysadmin?

  5. DSL is easy on DSL Hardware for Wiring Condos? · · Score: 1

I actually work for a company that does this type of thing. What we have on our properties is a mix of proprietary equipment and DSLAMs splitting one or more T1 lines. First, the proprietary:

TUT Systems (http://www.tutsys.com/) builds an expandable rackmount unit that transmits over any twisted pair line. While it can be run on top of dial tone (DT), it can cause problems to both services, so it's better to run it on a dry pair. This also eliminates the need for the resident to purchase a landline, since cell prices can be cheaper in some areas. It uses a very simple modem that requires no software and has no settings - you just plug it in and it works. The whole system can handle something along the lines of 136 subscribers.

The other systems we have run on typical DSLAMs spliting the T1(s). This method works better than TUT over DT, but we still run on a dry pair whenever possible. It uses just about any type of DSL modem, but you can run into configuration issues there. The ones we have been using must be configured in a Windows environment before they can be used on a Linux or Mac box, but they also have a 4-port hub built into them vs. the TUT's single RJ45 output.

The main disadvantage of the DSLAM system is the DSLAMs themselves can get spendy, depending on how many units you need to feed. You may be able to offset this initial cost buy grabbing used gear from ebay.

In both setups, the path is: T1(s)-->router-->DSLAM or TUT-->phone pair-->modem. There is no need for multiple switch arrangements, and we have easily pushed signal a quarter mile through multiple connect points and across 40-yr-old copper with no hiccups.

    Happy networking!

  6. We have some up here on Mainframe Operators Needed · · Score: 1

Well, my roomate up here in Portland is currently employed in the process of moving the county Sherrif's department off of their old mainframes and onto a more modern network. Since most of the existing personnel are vehement 9-to-5ers who have no interest whatsoever in learning how to manage the new system, there is a good chance they will find themselves looking for work at the end of the project.

  7. Re:I just helped someone on AOL Not Alone In Subscriber Decline · · Score: 1

It's even worse than that. I'm a cable/telco/hsd installer up in Portland, and most of the apartment buildings in the city itself are over 40 years old. That means the cable is one outlet, undergauge, and quite possible sticking out of the wall behind the 'fridge.

I can get you two phone lines only because the in-house intercomm system was removed a few years back: before that you had one line only. And that line is not a nice, neat 66- or 110-block punchdown - we're talking stripped wires on a lug-and-nut binding post.

Sure, it would be nice for them to upgrade to CAT5 for a house Net, but since the building is 90% concrete, the only place to run it is in conduit down the hallways - most owners won't go for that.

  8. Going downhill every year on Company Christmas Gifts / Bonuses? · · Score: 1

Let's see...the first major corp gave us a catalog to choose out of, each year with the company earned you more X-mas Ca$h for the catalog. When they re-combined with the parent company, it was a card.

At my current job, last year was a company dinner at a nice steak house. This year, we get a full day off for Xmas Eve, instead of a half-day.

The best I ever got? I worked for a gas station that gave us all monogrammed, logo'd Mini Mag-Lights.
