The current DRI Radeon drivers are horrible in 3D too, and don't go anywhere near taking full advantage of the hardware. I know - we've tested it:
Radeon 64 benchmarks.

Ahh, but it can;-) The 7500 is about as fast as the GeForce 3 Ti 500 under linux, and the 8500 will be even faster...
