  1. Re:Fake license plates... on Britain to log all vehicle movement · · Score: 1

In the UK the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) keeps a list of all the number plates in the UK so the system should be able to flag fake plates easily. With duplicates it would require a bit more computation.

  2. Is Microsoft breaking the law? on Cuba Switching to Linux · · Score: 1

I thought under the Helms-Burton act trading with Cuba was illegal. So how can the Cubans have Windows on their PCs without M$ being prosecuted?

  4. Re:well on Stars Have a Weight Limit · · Score: 1
The gravitational field of a star increases with mass. So a really massive star (approaching the x150 limit) will burn very quickly to maintain equilibrium. At some point the star will eventually run out of hydrogen and blow itself out (a super nova) collapsing into a white dwarf and finally a black hole.

A star beyond the 150 limit could therefore reach the super nova stage instantly.

The NY Times is important because it is read by the elite otherwise know as *opinion formers* - lawyers, accademics, and other journalists. So what gets printed in the NY Times will often get followed by other, more popular publications.

  6. Divert defence budget to space exploration on Spirit Rover Lands Successfully · · Score: 2

Well done NASA: space probes usually have only a 50% chance of success. Now just imagine what could be accomplished if the US government diverted even one-tenth of its $400bn annual defence budget onto space exploration.

  7. Your facts are wrong on Saddam Hussein Arrested · · Score: 4, Informative

You're facts are wrong. Firstly, it's was not the UN food program, but the Oil for Food program which was paid with Iraqi oil.

Secondly, a large part of the money from the "food" program was used to compensate foreign firms which had lost out through the war and sanctions.

Thirdly, a lot of essential medicines and other essential medical supplies such as oxygen could not be imported because of "dual use" considerations.

Fourthly, the UN money was kept in an escrow account in New York City. All purchases were done by UN officials.

    Well...actually no.

Economic progress has occured for a long time without the existence of Intellectual Property. In Industrialisation without National Patents, the economic historian Eric Schiff tells the story of how some of Europe's biggest corporations owe their existence to the absence of patent law in their home countries, such as the Netherlands and Switzerland.

There is an interesting review of his work by Guardian columnist George Monbiot, who discusses this, in the context of pharmaceutical patents.

  11. Re:.NET framework is key on Microsoft's CLR - Providing a Break from HW Vendors? · · Score: 1

I can't see it happening. Firstly, is MS going to port the .NET server on to other OSs ? Hardly likey. The fact is .NET locks you into using win2k servers. Secondly, MS has already tried (unsuccesfully) to leverage the installed base of MS Office with ActiveX. How many websites require you to run ActiveX components ? Thirdly, I think you underestimate the influence of IT professionals. What IS manager in charge of a hetergenous computing environment would gamble her career on implementing a .NET solution? So, I can't see the .NET strategy winning in a heterogenous computing environment, other than those which are already 100% MS.
