  1. Why the ship? on Archimedes Death Ray in San Francisco · · Score: 1

The deathray was used on sails. It torched them, preventing the ship a fast escape from shore. Besides - wood in water is hard to ignite -- its in a sea of coolant.

  2. A recent development on When Should You Quit Your Job? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am writing a rare reply to this thread as I was about to quit my job at a fortune 500 company. After 3 years of finding other jobs internally, but not being allowed to transfer, I was coming to a condition were all my work was over. I did get a job offer from a nice spot ( it was something I liked to do but also allowed time for grad school. ) and was given my first and last permit to go. 2 days before transfer, I was fired. Specifically, to make it impossible to go to the new job. In the time of this incident, I had correctly percieved that a signature is not a promise, and did my level best to search for a job outside the company as well as a job inside. Economy up here is tight, so I ended up streetside. I am in gradschool full time now, and its been a blessing. I had put away cash and maitain a secondary income channel. In 4 years, I should have the MSCS and PhD in Imaging I wanted. Running from Bad people and conditions make sense. Running from a condition of shop change? Fear not the future! Fear the trolls who act as the past!

  3. On seeking job2 on What Do People in the IT Field Do for Side Jobs? · · Score: 1

This one really hit home. Over the holiday here in the states, friends confided that they had 3 jobs, not 2. One is CEO of a SW firm. He has a job at Mitre in addition to a job teaching evening classes at MIT. Another works as a researcher at Boston U, while keeping a job as a SW writer at a nother company. I had come to the conclusion that plumbing, roofing and electrical may be it for me, as I am a landlord as well as a SW writer. Lesson was - 3 jobs, max on diversity as well as non - outsourceability.

  4. Getting work done. on How Do You Get Work Done? · · Score: 1

My college days still travel with me as I approach my 43rd Birthday. What I have had to do to get work done is: dedicate time to critical topics. I use a 2-3 hour work block for stuff. In my case, X Windows programing class was given 2-3 hours perday for material review and note rewrites, while the projects got their very own time block elsewhere. I also blocked in sleep. In a way, its a class. If I had to cut into rest time I would do my best to make it up elsewhere. Being reasonable in what you intend to do is another key aspect. You could simply top that to do list with "get the sheepskin" and then die hard at it for years. Break the big down into bits, do the bits, then bring them together. Limiting interrupts was my biggest problem. My College was at a serious lack of library space, so I used unoccupied lab space in the physics department, as well as odd space I could find on campus - Lo and behold, I soon had company asking for tutoring, a face to sing the joys of life at, as well as people more interested in disrupting others study time than anything else. This occured even when I shifted my time to getting up at midnight to study! I still remember 8 or so friends entering the off campus lounge at 3 AM to discuss the nights inspection of the adult clubs in up here. Home was only a little better, as an Italian/Brazilian house hold gets real loud around world cup soccer time. Its loud most of the time as well.8) Best answer i can give you is - line the stuff up, maintain a to do list, ( or keep a note book of stuff to do, and cross off items on that list as they get done. ) Keep stuff finite - no vast projects with half vast plans. Keep the focus on the stuff in front of you. That is why it is there.

  5. Alas Its broadband, but more like cashband... on Report: Broadband Too Expensive For Many · · Score: 1

Its not the content - its the speed. I cannot justify a higher speed that i can get from broadband with the cost. I would think USD$10 would be much more reasonable than $40. What do dedicated lines go for? If I can get mundo bigger speeds for $100 more, should I even care about a pricey low speed connection? Why am I feeding someones pocketbook big bucks?
