Most of the works/worlds that have been mentioned here are not SCIFI but more of the Space Fantasy Arena. Azimov, Clarke, Crichton are SCIFI writers who take the reader on a journey of extrapolation from today's technology to tomorrow's.
SCIFI is about the understanding of things to come. While understanding where we are today. From Robots, to NanoSwarms, to Thinking computers. These guys have the ideas and it is up to us to figure out how to make them real.
Interesting idea, ok so it would mean less trips to the video store, gas station, local food mart but it would mean that we would need larger trash trucks making more trips to the landfill. So where does it end? More trash in the landfill means more items that were created to be destroyed.
DIVX! Think about the waste.
"If this media catches on you may not have to return your DVD rentals in the future."
The rental chains business model is based upon you not returning them on time. So why would they go for this idea? and Where do you think that get there money from?
What he is talking about how we will turn a computer and the functions of a computer in to a DVD player. Do you care what OS a DVD player is using? No, we care that it will support and do what is asked of it. I also saw the Big Thinker show and think this guy is lost his marbles. Also he appears to be thinking out loud. Wait did I say that! I am waiting for the day when I can be paid to think up new crap all day and get paid for it!
We take our DV Recorders and create a couple films. Of we tune up the old harp and crank out a couple of cd's then we start our legal dOs attacks on the record companies for not publishing out works.
This smells like BS. Why run fiber? Why not Copper? What type of back-end are they running(Cisco, Nortel)? What computer can keep up with a 100/Mbits? Has anyone ever seen a system that can handle full duplex connections?
Bandwidth doesn't solve problems, created by man.
