Im not quite sure what they mean by desktop? Windows has been every where since at least 3.1, wtf do you mean is it ready? Every one and their grandma is using it.
You could use PHP to list the.pdf files, make a link to download them, and even delete them. However, php is only ran once, each the the.php file is called by the browser. So the 48 hour thing couldnt be done, using just PHP that is. PHP can execute shell commands, you could I guess have it call a program that would it self delete the file, but PHP wouldnt be involved in that.
