You are an extremely rare example.

I started off what was on Cartoon Network, but I never downloaded a series that was licensed (still don't).

90% of those who download Anime have no intention of buying it, and usually get pissy when you suggest they do.

"It's not worth my money," they say, but apparently it's worth their time.

Downloading anime actually hurts US companies a lot more than it hurts the MPAA because they don't have many (if any) theater runs, and it's really hard to get it on TV. And having it up for download does piss off the Japanese companies who then take it out on the US licensors.

Also, don't buy at Suncoast if you can avoid it, they're really expensive.

Well consider supporting the US companies if you want the price to come down, instead of primarily watching fansubs.

The only problem with an increase of interest from America in anime is the potential for it to alter the writing/direction of anime to make it more "suitable" for american audiences.

Things aren't going well in Japan for many anime companies, so they're starting to pay a lot of attention to foreign markets. That may be both a good and bad thing...

Oh and yes, fansubs piss off the Japanese companies as well, they take it out on the US companies.

    Well that and:

ADV has said repeatedly that they will not license TV broadcast rights to any network that will have to edit the show.

Thus why many PBS stations show it (subbed even) in its entirety, HBO could do it, and Sci-Fi maybe late at night.

    CN? Never.

  6. Re:Well you know... on Toonami Producer on Editing Process · · Score: 2, Informative

Kenshin COULD air, but would get a TV-M for many of it's 2nd season episodes. And it's unlikely Sony would be willing to let CN air the original version, and would push them to air their "Samurai X" hack and slash job.

Just so you know, parents in Japan complained about the violence in Evangelion, and Berserk aired at 2:30 AM on a cable network.

Regardless of the intention of the content, and the time, parents will be irresponsible and let their children watch, and will bitch and whine no matter WHAT they want.

This is why a network with an overall direction towards a more mature audience would have to pick up the slack.

Not that I REALLY care, since they will show it dubbed and I don't particularly like watching dubs (though I won't be hurt if I have to).

  7. Well you know... on Toonami Producer on Editing Process · · Score: 4, Interesting

Nothing's gonna solve the editing problem. It's on a network aimed at children, and children do watch.

Only way to get around that here in the states would be to have sci-fi suck it up and show it uncut with a (frequent) TV-M rating (though many shows would be unfairly labeled as such).

Even then, many of the best shows won't ever make it on TV here, simply because they don't have the style of Bebop, the Action element of gundam, and the "crap" that somehow attracts people like Dragonball Z does.

Editing will likely bar some shows entirely from network TV. ADV, who holds the N. Am. license to Evangelion have said it won't be licensed for TV if it has to be edited.

Or sometimes it's politics. The head of Toonami is a BIG Rurouni Kenshin fan. Problem is, Media Blasters can't show their (the original version) on TV. If kenshin ever hits the air in the US, it'll hit as "Samurai X," a hacked up, rewritten version of the original show (not related to the ADV release of the Kenshin OAVs as Samurai X).

Screw TV. I'll stick with my DVDs thank you.

I don't know about anyone else, but I always thought it was funny how the Open Source community yelled about "standards," yet we have so many damn standards that there aren't any.

Now that license issues are cleared up, RMS has a chance and he's gonna take it. Eliminate two, create one. This isn't a bad thing, since you STILL have the source.

We have options for customization, and a lot of freedom, but what we lack is any real consolidation (IE eliminating redundant standards), thus creating a plethora of pitfalls for software developers.

This is one thing I think the Linux Standards Base should cover. More than just one boring, rather useless "base," it should cover MANY bases, and specify standard APIs, installations, and specifications for systems/software. Hell make Linux Standard Base certification like that damn Made for Windows XX logo.

    Theory:

LSB defines a desktop base, a server base, and an embedded base.

On the desktop base you have modules (not necessarily compatible), say Gaming Module which includes all necessary packages and auto-detection and config info, a Network client module that automatically loads remote config utilities and any necessary client software, and a workstation module that adds it's required things.

    Same for server and embedded.

Also have the LSB supply standard definitions for the GUI APIs. Standard Themes, fonts, what have you.

If you can build a solid foundation for your system and get it under control (community control, it's still ours), then you'll attract users. I think that's a bit of what RMS is trying to do here.

Of course, the American studios are having a hard time keeping up with a lot of the stuff out there, so it's often not much of an issue (except for hot-ticket titles, like the Bebop movie will be).
