  1. Re:You must be blind! on CEO of Brilliant Defends Sneaky Installation Practices · · Score: 0

you must be blind, too. there is a possibility to emulate windows on linux. right? it's called WINE. its reported to run morpheus and kazaa on linux machines. (spyware issues left alone).
so chances are, it will run most of that windows-clients. so dont complain about that. if WINE emulates windows good enough but without that bsod's, it can be a good alternative to a native linux-client.

and be sure to check out KaZaa LiTE, the spyware and crap-free hacked version of kazaa. reported to run under wine, 1mb sized download. fasttrack client 100% kazaa-compatible. unidentifiable as non-spyware-ridden kazaa-lite from the net. try it.

  2. limewire and bearshare ad and spyware free on CEO of Brilliant Defends Sneaky Installation Practices · · Score: 0

there are hacked versions out, that are stripped from any unwanted and stupid crap. don't remember the sites or the names, but you can go to the KaZaa LiTE (kazaa filesharing completely ad and spyware free ;) works great) and click on links..., there are some other spyware-cleaner projects linked, with grokster, limewire, bearshare, audiogalaxy and imesh all cleaned from crap. but i only "tested" (hehe running 24h since 1 week) kazaa lite for now. no need for gnutella if i have crap-free fasttrack...

kazaa lite should also run under WINE-linux, too, but if you prefer gnutella for some reason, limewire in precompiled adware free java-version should be there...

  3. KaZaa lite on CEO of Brilliant Defends Sneaky Installation Practices · · Score: 0

no more whining about crapware in kazaa or the death of (usable) morpheus.

here is the next: KaZaa LITE

it is a 100% ad-/crap-/spy-/nonsenseware stripped (i.e. hacked) version of kazaa media desktop 1.5.
it has NO evil or annoying components in it, last recent build v10 is merely 1MB in size, bitrate limits, popups, blinking and non-blinking banners completely removed
    and
it is 100% compatible to the fasttrack-network and is undistinguishable from original kazaa (from the view of the fasttrack network). that way it can't be shut off or rejected, and it works 100% the same as regular kazaa and the old morpheus.

not quite legal I think but absolutely perfect in usability.
if you guys got morpheus 1.3 to work under wine, then kazaa lite should work, too. nearly the same program like all the fasttrack clones...
and if the download mirrors of kazaalite are overloaded again, just try regular filesharing tools to download the kazaalite-installer.
don't complain it's hacked but not open source ;) it's great.

  4. Better than ZoneAlarm... on Windows Tracks CDs & DVDs You Watch · · Score: 0

...is AtGuard. - Freeware (German link only sorry, but that "Download" link should be understandable for all)

AtGuard is even better in filtering net access from programs. ZoneAlarm is too generic for some applications, it just knows "program x.exe is/is-not allowed for internet-access/server-rights" what you dont know is what adress, what serviceport etc. it uses, nor can you block access from one program to one address while allowing access to another

Atguard instead allows you to control everything you like from restricting each application to a specific internet address and port to port-ranges or ZoneAlarm-like generic access for individual programs.
Plus it includes very good html-blocker features, filters html-transfer for any browser. It just strips every img src that contains ad.* or /banner/ etc. in path from the requested website. Animated Gif's are set to non-repeating. *sigh* The browser don't even know what he's missing. Pesky JavaScript popup-commands are selectively filtered with the rest of JavaScript untouched.

Great for surfing pr0n, warez, commercial net-newspaper and other ad-and-popup-ridden sites without all blinkin' crap and OnExit()-sickness.

ok it maybe sounds hyped hehe, but it's a really cool desktop firewall prog. I had enlightening when I dumped ZoneAlarm for this

Example: it is possible to keep morpheus working while at the same time all it's damn blinking ads are blocked, no hosts file editing, generic website blocking *.doubleclick.net etc.. The default filters may be a bit too aggressive but now I even view slashdot without that banner above ;)

And for all that it's freeware

That's right folks. This article (RIMM vs. SD-RAM) at Tom's Hardware shows even more the self-contradiction within that site. That time Rambus was smacked down comletetly. It even has figures and (some kind of) proof for its conclusions. Something I am missing at the newest pro-RIMM article
Have you noticed? There is no nothing to back-up their claims! No cool diagram showing some magic number difference on Tom's Hardware???.

Seems like Rambus found a good use for all those precious marketing-$s.
Don't trust Tom's anymore. It's labelling ads as editorial columns!

  6. Linux and XP - use both on SuSE 7.3 vs XP · · Score: 2, Interesting

Personally, I use XP as desktop OS and Linux for the DSL-router.
XP *really* is a hundred times more stable than the 98se, 98, 95b, 95a, 3.11, 3.1 that I used before. the only thing that sometimes totally crashes it is the damn openGL driver for my old Voodoo3 (a hacked version since 3dfx is dead long before xp was even thought of - 16MB, 350MHz, it still reaches 30fps in 1024x768). everything else is stable, no crash no BSOD, no nothing.
And that *hibernate* feature is nothing less than perfect. xp takes over the powerswitch, one press, system saves RAM to HDD, power off. powerswitch again system loads HDD-RAM back, ready to work.
from power-off to your last edited spreadsheet with continued dvd-rip in background in less than 30seconds. show me that in linux.
press reset on running linux, will check ext2-fs'es forever. press reset on xp, ntfs'es don't even notice. though I dunno how to check uptime in xp like in linux, it must have been at least a week since last real restart (not hibernate). ok, linux servers have months as uptimes. but not on a desktop where you frequently change or tweak something. and if you have to shut it down to have some silence in the evenings

linux is by far the best for servers. linux desktop I tried and it sucked. but as server, its cool. I'm using linux-router-project distribution on the server, fits on one floppy disk and converts 486dx50 junk to a lpd-printserver and dsl-router with ~20W power consumption. (2000/xp can access lpd printers with no problems) Put that onefloppy-distribution on an old 100mb hdd and set hdparm to hdd-off 1 minute and the server boots in 20secs from off to lpd/dsl-online. impossible with windows. (that with stripped down-windows and connection-sharing on pentium 133 was like being in slow-motion-HELL) = router cost: 0.00$

conclusion: use windows for desktop, linux on any other (server, networked, embedded)machine.
that way windows can't be hacked from the internet and can't send anything to the NSA/BSA. Plus the server with the first client starting from off to ready in 30-40secs. All your customers can read your documents. All your family (except grannie) is able to use the desktop.

  7. morpheus worth a look on Concerning The Cancellation of Futurama · · Score: 0

I am SO happy that there is morpheus filesharing. Didn't watch more than one or two episodes on TV but still got all on my HDD ;).

if fox cancels the series, the smallest station that broadcasts the next futurama-episodes, it is sufficient for me. somebody will MPEG them and share them on morpheus. that way it's even free of the damn commercials.

here in germany it is broadcasted by pro7, some network that just ran into big financial problems. I bet they'll now go on an audience whoring trip spitting out self produced garbage like the other german crapchannels.
and it will surely be too expensive to translate the futurama episodes anymore. boohoohooo no more german futurama series.
...now where did I put my gun?
