  1. Re:Like Unix but with more Cruft (TM) on Microsoft to End DLL Confusion · · Score: 0

Well, Microsoft seems to adopt more and more of the Unix functionality. They're about to give the users a powerfull shell as well.

I guess the point and click wizard is not really that good.

So, if Microsoft tried to do something different with their OS, why are they looking at Unix so much?
Mac OS X? Nahh.. I will let you draw the conclusion...

  2. Re:analogous to water/electric company IMHO on Bad Behavior on the 'Net - Who Pays the Bandwidth Bill? · · Score: 0

Well, I think that the ISP playing god is an important discussion. As I see it, the ISP's should try to disconnect users that are creating problems. If the user is unaware of the problems (problem beeing defined as worms/virus ) and calling customer support about beeing rejected to connect, they could just tell them to re-install their system, or what ever.. Perhaps send a notification to BSA as well? In an ideal world I would send my webserver logfiles to my ISP and tell them to turn off that moron who has a worm infected machine. Beeing on the internet is a little like driving a car.If you don't know what you are doing, don't connect to the net. If you really must connect, prove that you have the knowledge for doing that. Or perhaps it should be the other way around, you have full access untill you screw up. Then you have to prove that you have learnt something. Don't get me wrong, I want to fight for the freedom of the net. I just want it to be less problematic. It's the ignorants that are the problem, and the problem they cause, can lead to wrong decisions among ISP's. Please continue with this discussion.

I use Scilab instead of octave, there's no real reason for that, but it's great for writing small apps really fast, if you want to tryout any new ideas. Of course, you can do the same with octave and matlab. I feel that you can't really do that if you use Fortran or C. If I would need speed, I'd go for Fortran or C and Atlas or any other lin.alg. package.

IMHO, I wonder what it would be like if people started to use a "wikipedia" solution instead of mailinglists, newsgroups. Perhaps with an option to get modifications of the wikipedia sent to you in email?

You're right there! There is no such thing as bugfree code, let's all agree on that. But a manufacturer that does not correct code with errors should be punished by customers abandoning theier products... Well.. perhaps I demand too much, assuming the admins have the brains to see that there are alternetivs.. Stupid and lazy admins and ISP's are also a part of the problem, what we should do with them, I don't know. Any ideas? There are many ignorant idiots that put up their IIS at home on their *DSL perhaps without even knowing it. Why didn't just the ISP's disable their connection to the internet until they fixed their webserver?
