    that I couldn't care less about wheter it is a source or binary distribution.
    What counts is to have the latest (and greatest) version of the programs. They tend to be better more bugfixes etc. (and new ones of course)

    I run debian stable right now, but as soon as I get a new harddisc, I'll turn to debian testing.

    With a source dist I guess you are even more on the bleeding edge, right? Or at least, could be...

    I laugh...
    Well let them play with their DRM patents...
    The best thing that could happen is microsoft get's really hurt, the IT industry get's even more crippeld due to fear of patents lawsuits. Then perhaps something can happen to this crappy patent and drm crap, something that could put an end to it...
    And one can always hope that SCO looses soon so that linux can stand there as the system without any kind of problems with patents etc....

    Well, I can't understand what is the problem with fansites. If I had created Harry Potter I think that I would not have had any problems with people doing free advertising for my books. After all, its those people that buy my book.

    I think much of the problem with patents, copyright, IP-laws etc, is that the monopoly, that is created due to those laws, is based on the situation that was before the IT revolution. Charles Dickens stories was successful due to their own merits. Today Dickens would only have been successful as long as the marketingpeople could come up with new products... (I hope you get my point).
    There is a need to have a look at the economical system!

    Finaly, give credit to the original creator, that's one thing I think that they should have the guts to do. Otherwise I would call them pirates or something.

    Indeed, but what tools are there to make the GUI part more easily maintained. A macro language that is translatable into MFC/gtk/qt/tk/whatever GUI code, would that be a possibility?
    Is there such tools today?

    But I sure agree, make better backends!!!!

    That was among the most stupid things I've ever heard. I guess that there is no relation between the amount of gas you use and the distance you drive?? Geee.. and I have believed that all my life!

    Well... PDF is only looking good on the screen, there is no corespondance between what you see and what you get on the printer!

    Yes, I've hade a pdf created by a mac user... looking good on the screen, but it was a total crap on paper....

    I like to program in postscript :-)

    Well, I see a market for SPU's (Specific Processing Units, yes, I just invented that name).

    When all you need to do is to do matrix multiplications, why the hell do you need integer arithmetic? Hell, a 400 stage pipeline and just fill it up with floatingpoint numbers. That will be quite fast.

    Well, when you don't need it anymore, it's useless.. but I'll guess the day when AMD/Intel will create anything that is even remotly competetie with such a SPU, well.. that day will not be in my lifetime.
    So, why aren't there any such SPU's? It's not like there's not a market for doing floating point calculations....

    As I said before, prices are changing fast, so it is a little tricky to find the price.
    But you certinly have a point here.
    I'd say: find the time to complete your task for a number of computer modells FIRST.
    Then it would be quite easy to find prices when you are about to place an order for 200 machines.

    Gaming benchmarks is a totaly different thing. What difference does 145 fps do compared to 144 fps when your screen only updates 90 times per second?

    You've got a point here.

    So what we really need are tables showing: Task A takse x minutes, consumes y J energy on a XYZ machine.

    Then you can pick your specific task, the energyconsumption and current energyprice and the price to buy the machines and compare a lot of different modells.

    One interesting question though. If I buy 2 GHz CPU's for my cluster, when I've finished building it, I could have gotten 2.1 GHz CPU's for the same price or even cheeper...

    The problem with work per dollar is that prices are cut with 40% anyday.. so a price comparison is not valid for a long time. But, they sure as hell are important when it comes to placing an order for 200 machines..

    So what matters is: work per time and then you can calculate costs later....

    This is a clear case of where we have technology, but no one thinks about consequences of using it.
    You have to think one step further.
    Perhaps the RFID would be good for the company to ease some things.
    But what happens when they get your RFID and your VISA number?

    Anyone can place a RFID reciever (or however that works) anywhere....

    If you accept something, then you have to accept its consequences...

    Well,most users are happy with a ATA/133 or perhaps a SATA150 disc. But there are those who require extremly fast data storage.

    Just wait until they are gonna put a sniffer on a backbone.....
