it's not just the aesthetics that are the problem. There are considerations for both the damaget the mountain might do the exterior, as well as potentially compromising the Lightning conductors. Oh and the fact that legally it's not allowed

nope no windows: one point is an attic in the main house, the other is a barn (no windows), the other has windows, but they face away from the other 2 buildings, and the 4th building has no useful windows either

This sounds initially quite an admirable idea, but what about the keeping of information for a long time for future generations.
In the UK about 15-ish years ago all schools in Britain took part in the new Domesday project where information was gathered about the places we live. It was stored on laser disc. Now there aren't any laser disc readers around to read the data and it's effectively useless.

Lets also not forget that there is real concern about the transitory nature of the web. Old sites go and never return, what will have to show our grandchildren about the beginnings of the web?
What will happen to the data from the University library, the students Ipaqs (or similar computers).

All these digital storage ideas are great as an addition to paper but they require another piece of equipment to read it, whereas good ole paper and ink just requires eyes!

as an aside (if they're taking notes on their ipaq I hope the lecturer is talking really slowly - inputing anything with a stylus is so monumentally slow)

yup, had a similar problem with Dick on irc. There was a guy on irc asking [the channel] if anyone was using the same network card. Dick Morrell seemed to take great offence to this, complained about his "abusing" his bandwidth and banned him. I thought that was grossly unfair, afterall he wasn't asking him directly but asking the users in the channel, when I commented on how I thought that banning him was harsh, he just exploded at me for a couple of minutes before banning me.
I've never been back, and uninstalled the product, (which I had thought was quite good up until then) and would definately NOT recommend it to others.
IP Cop sounds pretty good though, "smoothwall without the dick" sounds appealing :)
