  1. openldap+bind+saba+winbind on Best FOSS Active Directory Alternative? · · Score: 1

microsoft AD is several well integrated things in one. But in this FOSS world you get all the building blocks, but you may have to assemble them yourself..
Thus you get great flexibitity, and power. But it may be that you are not very interested in tinkering with the internals. And building your enviroment from the ground up.
You should atlest test out the Debian Edu /Skolelinux [1] distribution, It's made to be easy to admin for a part time teacher /part time admin. And comes with openldap+bind+saba+winbind out of the box.
You can easily join linux, mac, and windows machines into the domain. have central authentication, and roaming profiles. And is tailor made just for your use case.

DISCLAIMER :: No knowledge of the quality of the book. ::
My history of electonics (offhand translation to english) book that i read in school some years ago. Claimed the main reason for betamax failing, was the rental market. Since the first models of betamax players rewinded the tape without unloading it from the readhead it wore out the tapes a lot faster then vhs.
naturally videostores choose vhs that lasted longer. even with it's inferior quality.

  3. Sender Policy Framework on Has Microsoft 'Solved' Spam? · · Score: 3, Informative

Sender policy framework is a system to prevent fake sender address in emails. it works by checking the claimed sender domain, in the email, against a TXT record in the DNS system. The TXT record contains information of ip's or hostnames, allowed to send email on behalf of the domain in question.
If the email have a faked sender address it can be bounced or labeled suspicious.

This works amazingly well, and stops all faked sender emails before it's accepted in the server. Effectivly blocking virus and spam sent with forged addresses. Non exsisting domains are allready blocked in the mail servers so if everyone owning a domain was to implement this. It would make me a very happy person. Ofcouse spammers can still send email from domains under their own control, but those go into online blacklists fairly quickly

Unfortunatly it does not have the widest accept yet, but growing all the time. After hotmail implemented it in their DNS records, spam is at an all time low around here. Not getting a single spam email from faked hotmail addresses in ages.
And only 6 months ago I had a dedicated "sent from hotmail" folder since it was 99% likly to be spam anyway...

  4. Re:Linksys? on FreeBSD Based Gaming Router · · Score: 1

I was basicaly doing this on a 486 33Mhz pc using shorewall and a tc script, untill i replaced it with a linksys wrt54G running openwrt, shorewall and wondershaper.
the openwrt handle everything i throw at it. on my 5/5Mbit link, with low cpu consumption (10-30% depending on load). and the pingtimes are lovely with wondershaper.
the linksys isn't a powerhouse exactly, and a shorewall restart akes about 90 seconds. but with iptables save/restore, this is a nonissue. Boottimes are quite acceptable compared to all semiadvancved routers out there. Not that you ever reboot the thing...

I Admit that it do takes quite a beating to saturate my 5/5 in the first place, but it happened frequently enoughf to be worth the 30 minutes it took to setup shorewall and wondershaper on the router.

the wrt54g+opwnwrt have lower power consumption then a full pc, and very low noise compared to a pc. But still remain a full linux with the ipkg package management, allowing you the usualy freedom you experience in linux. Something you dont get from all the custom firmwares out there.

And It's dead easy to install for even the least technical inclined gamer out there. But it do require the use of ssh and reading skills, so it's a notch harder then custom firmware's that use the webinterface only.
