  1. Re:The Bell Curve Reviews on Replacing SAT with LEGOs · · Score: 1

I find it interesting that the reviewer that argued the "pro" side used exerpts and citations to support the book. However, the reviewer that took the "con" side generally used personal attacks to denigrate the authors. I would think that it would be generally accepted in the scientific community that there are differences among the races just as there are among races of other species. Why is it that we readily accept sub-speciation of other species based soley on color but we can't accept it for humans?

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering as some of your posts in this story/thread sounded rather (excuse the next term as it is probably a bit harsh) rabid against the religious.

And actually, I'll have to disagree with you concerning our general conversation. I do believe it's a parents perogative to require a child to do X. If they don't want to do X then they can find another roof to live under. (that's my political philosophy). Personally however, I wouldn't mind my children reading infidels.org with my knowledge (so that I could explain my POV, etc.)

[obOT] Children shouldn't have computers or TV's in their rooms anyways. Monitoring of their activities is a parents duty. [/obOT]

[snip] I'd argue that a parent does not have the right to indoctrinate their child in an attempt to bring the child's idealogies into conformance with their own. Some parents may attempt to do so, but this is certainly bad parenting, and exactly why education is indeed compulsory - at school a child can visit the school library, read textbooks, talk to people, and generally do things their parents may not approve of.

Based on your other postings I'm wondering that if your child chose to follow a fundimentalist Baptist philosophy if you would not attempt to indoctrinate them in your beliefs. (which I may be wrongly assuming are probably atheistic).

I actually traded my CGA monitor to a chick for her mono monitor so I could go back to running in Herc mode as I preferred the higher resolution to a crappy four colors.

As for optimization, definately check your queries and always use keyed fields and == queries. Doing like queries will kill your performance to being unusable on decently large tables (>100k records). Definately read the MySQL docs concerning RAM usage and the various switches to optimize it's RAM usage. That is extremely important.

As for Apache, don't use .htaccess at all costs and only compile in required modules. Also check the tuning FAQ mentioned above.

Granted, I wouldn't classify it as a GP language, but it's damn close to the extent that I often have to decide between it and perl. Would I use either for writing a full and local app with UI? Probably not. But on the server it's handy as hell.
