  1. Re:English translation of the paragraph used on Jon Johansen Indicted by Norwegian Authorities · · Score: 1

The tricky bit here is that Jon claims he only made the GUI.

That means he himself did not violate any of the paragrafs here. Exept maybe part 4 (Aid), but even that is out on a ledge here. Hi didn't aid in the process of making DeCSS he only made it easier to use......

And still there is the point of interoperability, that could make the above paragraf invalid. ( there's a lot of conflicting laws in this area, and I think that's why they have taken so long to make a decission on wheter or not to proceed.)

Basicly the "construction" of DeCSS could be illegal but not nesecarily the use of it, as you are allowed to make your own backups of any media you purchase. That's why they don't use the copyright laws in this case.

It's going to be interesting to see how this develops.

Sorry but Norwegian law states that you do.

You are allowed to back up music movies etc. for OWN use (to save the original) You can only use one copy at the time. But if you sell or give this copy to anyone else without destroying your own copy you break the law.

And also by Norwegian law any part of a contract / license that contradicts Norwegian law is invalid and can be ignored. (at least it is like this in a lot of other instances. i.e. if a contract says you only have 1 month warranty instead of 1 year as stated by Norwegian law)
