Because, in the Win2000 30k bugs article, there were immediately 100,000 zealots slobbering to jump in and agree with the "Slashdot opinion".

It happens all the time around here so, yes, accusing Slashdot of hypocrisy is most often also correct on an individual user basis.

Unfortunately, the .doc attachment you sent me is coded in a special MS proprietary format. Please resend it in an open standard format that is fully described by IETF, ISO, W3C or other international standards body. Also, please request your software vendor to submit their widely-used format for standards approval.

I will bet you one hundred dollars that utterly no one outside of other Linux pundits will ever re-send the message in another format, because your bounce accomplishes nothing aside from proving an ability to sound pretentious. Wait, wait, don't tell me -- "fine then, I probably didn't need to read it that much." Maybe, maybe not; the fact is that business runs on Microsoft and you are going to affect yourself alone.

For better or worse, e-mail is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury and when 80+% of the world uses Microsoft, they make the rules.

You have got to be kidding. The "spare the rod" mentality is largely to blame for the increasingly sorry state of this planet. Kids are not afraid of any repercussions because there are none -- nothing is little Timmy's fault. It's these kids who have never actually paid for any mistakes or wrong decisions that grow up to sue McDonalds when he dumps coffee on himself.

When I was growing up in the late 70s, mouthing off to my parents out in public earned me a swat on the back of my head. Now, parents are scared stiff to even do so at home. Why? I have no ill-effects from such punishment now, but I sure as hell did learn who was boss in a hurry. Oh, but it's abusive! Bullshit. Attempting to coddle these little shoulda-been-abortions when they destroy something just for the sake of doing so is more abusive than a smack on the ass.

As the victim of four senseless vandalisms over the years, I couldn't give a damn about helping these pieces of shit any further than I can fit my boot up his ass. You go ahead and hug them until the cows come home. I've got a Louisville Slugger beside the bed for the next time I hear my car alarm screaming or someone rattling around in the bushes outside.

Does it matter? Consider the following:

    - Adobe spends, say, $800,000 (purely arbitrary) to produce software for the Asian market. Nobody buys it.
    - Adobe spends, say, $0 to produce software for the Asian market. Nobody buys it.

You're Adobe -- wouldn't you pull the plug?

I'm one of the lucky few who have long ago given up on TV and, I dare say, if the recording of digital programs becomes as hotly contested as this endless MP3 soap opera, it will be the last straw for many more. Really, it's not as though TV offers anything that can't be found elsewhere, especially with increasingly widespread broadband access.

Sure, one of the key problems with recent attempts to eliminate free-use rights from digital music is that the "average man" doesn't make use of such rights enough for it to matter. I again speculate that, if Larry Lunchpail can suddenly not record the Sunday afternoon NFL games, he will start spinning and not quit until the walls are painted in blood.

    I, personally, can't wait.
