  1. Market drive does not exist for monopolies on Telecommuters and Downtime? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Considering that residential service in most parts of the US is still controlled by baby-bell monopolies, expecting business service to all customers may not be such an unreasonable demand.

To make an analogy, imagine that your local cable monopoly decided to offer "improved service" for an additional fee over your current cost. There would be immediate and justifiable complaints.

Yet it seems okay for the phone company to do this.

Off course, if there was true competition, there would be no grounds to require the best service for everyone. The market would take care of that itself.

  2. Corporate Interests Have the Microphone on FTC and JD Holding Hearings on IP · · Score: 1

Lobbyists and lawyers are involved every day and every step of the way in shaping the opinion of the politicians involved in all patent related legislation.

Where are the suits for those who think we need to loosen the IP chokehold? They do not exist, because frankly there is no money in it.

I don't have a clue how to change any of this. I feel like I'm sitting in the back seat of a bus driven by a drunk driver.

  3. How would this would work in the world? on Writing Messages In Empty Space With GPS · · Score: 1

Unless you are outside with a direct shot at 3 or more GPS satellites, your device will not know where it is.

This is a problem for the US cell companies that are trying to integrate positioning technology into their cell phones as per an FCC mandate (which had a deadline of Oct 2001, but was extended for 4 more years because the phone companies said they could not do it yet.)

There are other approaches to establishing location, such as interpolating timing signals from various cell towers, but as far as I know none of those has been implemented in the USA yet.

GPS in the city will be spotty for some time. And if the bus stop has a thick roof over it, you will not get a schedule sitting under it.
