    Bill Gates is trying to buy a name as a good guy

    Its pretty hard to find fault with a motivation that amounts to seeking forgiveness by doing the most good you can do.

    I wasn't trying to find fault with it. I agree this is a far better thing than carrying on at Microsoft or just sitting in his mansion eating cheesecake and watching his money.

    No. Bill Gates is trying to buy a name as a good guy. He wants to be remembered for doing good, not for shady but successful business practices.

    As much as I hate to admit it, for once Bill Gates is right. People who lack enough decent food or sanitation, and suffer from chronic diseases and lack of even the most rudimentary health care, have things they need more than the Internet.

    Where do you start to improve things? All the aid given to Africa has achieved alarmingly little. If these people have access to information they are much more capable of improving their situation long term than if they had a bag of rice instead.

    And that's it, processed foods contain insane levels of sugar.

    Plus desk jobs encourage people to sit still and vegetate.

    People need to work a little exercise into their routine. Walk the stairs, walk to the shops and back, do a bit of exercise a few times a week.

    Sure. But they are not different in the way that say Germany and France are different.

    Try ordering Missouri food with your Missouri English in Texas and you won't have a problem. Now try speaking German in France. .

    Why are you stuck on language though?
    Ask a Texan if homosexuality is a good thing. Then ask a Californian. Now do the same thing in Germany and France. The Europeans end up being more similar.

    Seems obvious to me. Someone from Missouri and someone from Texas may disagree about homosexuality (red herring example.) Someone from Germany may not even be capable of communicating with someone from France so they will never know if they agree or not.

    People from the US always claim that US states are the same thing as European countries. It's nonsense.

    If you ever watch BBC news they keep throwing out pointless distraction stories out and devote just enough air time to NSA spying to make it look like yesterdays news. They don't totally black it out as that would cause suspicion. It's impressive how much BBC news can't be trusted anymore.

    These CIA/NSA agencies are the next generation of terrorists. Who inspires more terror? A random fool on slashdot singing about fucking dogs or a major world government that spys on everyone, forces information from people with secret gag orders and threats, abducts and kills people in foreign countries, tortures, and then pathologically lies about the whole thing.

    It was obvious the US had gone rouge when it was caught running CIA torture flights though Europe. It only got worse since then.

    Yet the US government has lied about the extent of these programs to us and to themselves many times over already. We established they will lie to hide their dirty spying programs but no-one was really surprised about it and no-one is being held accountable for it.

    What does it take to make the head of the NSA accountable for a few billion counts of invasion of privacy and/or theft of private data?

    There is outrage by politicians, but cops and the lettered agencies are (literally) ripping hard disks apart. Thank God for copies! On destruction, people hear the news and publish widely across the 'net. Nothing disinfects like sunshine.

    Us IT people have plenty of experience of hard disks dying on us. The fascists have to destroy every single copy to win. Their stupid gag orders won't work if they have to gag everyone.

    all three nodes that you use in Tor is monitored by the NSA and such they can simply do traffic analysis based on time and size of data packets.

    I don't mean using Tor to access an open web site, but to access an onion forum. If that drug site I don't remember the name manages to continue working why wouldn't this?

    The NSA already know who is behind Groklaw, they know who to torture for information regardless of how well hidden the website is.

    And when the NSA commands you to find out and tell them who your users are? You may either obey or spend the rest of your life in prison. Or move to somewhere with more freedom like Russia and run your website from there.

    Groklaw would have happily pointed out the few thousand ways the NSA were breaking the law. That is more than enough reason for the NSA to encourage them to shut down.

    What service did Lavabit provide if it's even possible for them to let the NSA to eavesdrop? Did Lavabit have the private keys of their users? Why did anyone ever trust such an arrangement?

    Lavabit did it properly and never had access to customer emails. But if those emails went in or out without PGP it would have been possible to sniff them off the network. Even if they did use PGP the NSA could still collect the meta-data. I'm guessing that the NSA order was to devise some way of getting access to the customer emails either by backdooring the encryption or sniffing the mails on the way in and out, possibly with a MITM SSL attack.

    Of course no-one here has seen the exact order so it's all guesswork.

    A fundamental flaw in the democratic system is that once voted in these people are not accountable to anyone for years.

    A nation can be a democracy without being an absolute, all-issues-voted-on-by-all-people democracy. There are shades of grey.

    The people can choose between two candidates who will both act exactly the same way. The state decides everything else. What shade of gray is that?

    There is such a thing as a European in much the same way as there is such a thing as a human. As a trading block Europe makes sense, but as a grouping of different peoples it's an arbitrary miss-mash.
