  3. slashdot referrer fee on Morpheus Hijacks Browsers For Affiliate Links · · Score: 1

Interesting idea, sort of a donation that doesn't cost you anything. Or, maybe that should be the subscription fee!!!!!

Wanna subscribe to Slashdot's extra features, just download this nice plugin.

We have to think about the privacy implications though. I personally don't care that Slashdot can track when and how often I go to certain shop-sites, but I know that many people will. But hey, if it's voluntary!

Besides, it remains to be seen whether sites like Amazon and others will accept this kind of thing. Basically, you're not actually referring, you're just bringing someone to a destination that they were going to already. Evildoers will have no problem with signing up for the referrer programs every time their id is cancelled (assuming that it's easy and automatic to sign up). Slashdot however will have to do stuff in the open.

On an other note, it just goes to show that people need more control over their computers. The system should make it obvious, that something is installing something that's going to interact with your browser.
The problem is easily solved in Linux (or any other *nix-like), just never run as root and make sure that the browser can't use your local plug-ins directory.

A common carrier, however, does not have the right to block his traffic because they want to stop spam.

If they don't, they should. If he causes enough traffic it could cause big problems for his carrier. Probably it would cost them some money, but in the worst case scenario, it could push them to a chapter 11

This guy is just abusing the system. It's no problem to adjust his server so that it's not an open mail relay and his friends can still use it to send mail.

    John,

I've got this to say to you:

It's nice that you want the internet to be totally free, but what good is a free internet that's not usable because of stupid pricks trying to sell anything to every second dumbass out there.

If you can't setup your server to authenticate your friends, then ask somebody for help. Or you could setup accounts for them, so that they can log in remotely and use pine or elm or yadda yadda yadda.

If your friends are to dumb to remember passwords, then maybe they're to dumb to use e-mail. You should give them pre-adressed and stamped enveloppes so that they can communicate with other people whilst on their trip.
Or maybe they'd get confused trying to figure out what stamps to use in which country!

Open mail relays are not free speech! I hope you get shut down real soon.

Pretty soon you won't be allowed to own cars, because they make it possible to kill people or escape from the scene of a crime.

The problem here is that not enough people believe/realise that they are adversly affected by this.

I saw a show on Discovery about interstellar travel.

One of the ideas was to make a craft that would have a parachute like sail in front of it. Every now and then a nuclear device would be launched towards the sail and have it explode before reaching the sail. The blast would then push the sail forward.

Of course it would also push the craft itself back, but the affected area of the craft would smaller than that of the sail.
