True, but not everyone has a fast newsgroup server that collects more than 6 hours worth of binaries.

Yep, more *nix web DEVELOPERS but very few *nix web DESIGNERS. Many designers are using Macs. There isn't even a good photo editor out there (say what you want about Gimp, but it's no Photoshop) -- why would you start with Flash?

That's true, but you also have to consider the fact that the definition of an operating system is changing all the time. Network connectivity is essential to a modern consumer operating system even though it wasn't 10 years ago, so I would say that it's perfectly reasonable to include it as part of the OS. What about a browser? I guess that's a debate that needs to be resolved.

How is this post insightful? You haven't said anything. Are you saying that the states should drop the cases so that we can finally get some sort of conclusion? This is what Microsoft WANTS to do. They don't want the independent cases to drag things out for years more.

Or are you saying that Microsoft's comments are ridiculous? The states are trying to force Microsoft to release Windows without "middleware." That could seriously jeopardize the definition of an OS. What counts as middleware? IE? A telnet client? A web servers? A JPG library? Spellchecker? There are thousands of things that can be removed from an OS that can be called "middleware" but they're all important for a viable commercial OS. I want to see what the states want before judging this one.

It's still possible to control something when it happens within borders, though. Look at the EU trying to regulate spam and cookies. Germany has not allowed cookies for some time now. Collection of personal information from children under the age of 13 has been illegal in the USA. Trying to pass legislation to make things work a certain way on the Internet has happened for a while now and this is not new. People can pick on the USA for a lot of things, but this argument is just weak.

Only 500 customers? There's a whole lot more potential than just 500 customers. Any company that has a large number of documents is likely to be interested. You're thinking way too big. Think about all the law firms, research labs, consulting firms, schools, universities, libraries, newspapers, publishers, agencies, accountants, ... The list goes on and on.

I.M. Pei was an MIT grad. You can bet it was done at a *substantial* discount or, better yet, for FREE. That's not the only building he did for MIT, either.
