Really, lets not fuss over this... your government loves you and would not like to see your messages get routed to say that girl you've been talking to alot on chat. Really, what would your girlfriend think? But we have been having some problems with the old echelon box. It is very tough to say what could happen.
He has a point. Lucent equipment (formerly ascend) is quite infamous for thier wicked contraptions. But do not rush into the v.92 standard. I would give it 4 months minimum and then check with the news groups to see what the suckers...er admins on the technological edge...have to say about the new code.
What is the legality of nullrouting a specific address or network block. Although we may have our reasons...are those actions (even if the intent is good natured) protected from lawsuit?
I believe the Rebel spam system is going through such a contest of justice currently...
If someone takes the law into thier own hands... and dispenses justice... would this vigilante be safe from prosecution?
Really I guess it comes down to whose right is it to police the internet. Is it the justice system in the region they connection from? Is it our right as administrators to dispense justice?
Mind you, on a weekly basis, as an administrator I dispense justice for actions that in some cases are legally wrong...but these wrongs will never see a courtroom. (Usually with the termination of the offenders account).
Remember the fuss a while ago about the Network Solutions' license agreement concerning domains. (The one that says they are free to do nearly anything, include reposses your children and pets.)
Has anyone ever tried contacting the registar of a domain and report such fraudulent abuse of a domain name. Network Solutions is fairly quick about protect mother corporate.
Although PayPai.com uses something named EasySpace, I am sure the power of being a domain registar has already corrupted those in charge there and they would be more than insanely happy to be Registar cops.
Will it soon be, Registar to the rescue? Instead of going through the proper authorities...especially when the business in question is located in some far off land or a floating oil rig with no internet law.
Don't worry about it... looks like the slashdot effect already took care of the problem.

Yes! Finally I can get digitized and take on Master Control myself! But really, this technology has been around since 1977. Disney brings us one of those excellent "historical documents" refered to as Tron. There we see digitizing people has been around for a lot longer then some stafford punks would like us to believe.
Anyhow, I am off to suit up and get ready for a cycle race or two and hopefully I can slam my disc right through the MC. Remember, the users have all the power!
Looks like we may get some script kiddie/politician's out of this deal.
I mean really, it doesn't take a genius to use backdoor programs such as Netbus or Back Orafice. Hopefully our politicians will be able to understand these tools to utilize them properly in ballot stuffing.
If not, I am sure some enterprising young man could create a nice GPL'd backdoor utility for Americia's political elite (now known as @m3r1C9A's p0l1t1c@l l33t). You could simply call it PTW, or Push To Win.
I for one can't wait to hear my mayor give a speech in leet speak.
I have a question for the good Doctor. Exactly why does open source equate to a chaotic development model.
This is a wholy unwelcomed generalization...
Simply distributing the source code to an application and attaching a very friendly license does not say a damn word about the process used to develop that software.
Take for instance OpenBSD, Q-Mail, ProFTPd. Maybe they have various licenses...bsd license, funky q-mail license and the gpl. But they are mere examples of a group of people or individual developing with a strict model of security in mind.
I do believe the good doctor needs a new pair of glasses. Obviously he hasn't had an easy time reading or he would not have much such a horrid generalization. He would have read about some of those wonderful teams out there working towards our benefit.
Talk about the post of the day. I spent 3 hours this morning sending off abuse reports to psi.net.
It was previously a uu.net account he was performing these actions from...but our many complaints finally had his uu.net account destroyed *thanks abuse@uu.net*.
The worst part about this is actually explaining why this message didn't really come from us. People just don't understand that the internet isn't the most honest place in the world, or exactly how easy it is to forge these headers.
So my day goes on...and tomorrow I will probably answer another 15 of these abuse reports. Why don't I do something about this...well...I have alot of projects to do and talking to lawyers doesn't exact appeal to my geeky nature.
My earlier post..I noticed my link was broken... oops.
Anyhow, jeffk at somethingawful.com has a full review on amd vs. intel as well. Although not as informative as most reviews...he definately approaches the situation from a different angle. That angle being one in a completely different dimension.
Please forgive me. I completely forgot he was asking about mp3/CD player combos. The empeg unit uses a hard drive with a modified version of linux to run mp3's off the sucker.
Although, for lack of detail...I am assuming he ordered from his telco, what my telco refers to as a 56k circuit. *he just called them a pair of copper lines*.
Be forwarned these prices vary greatly...pricing is dependant upon distance between the points, whether or not they are in the same exchange, term of service, and whatever happens to be the basic rate. Just guessing...around here that would cost a few hundred a month with a long term contract *install fee's are usually nominal*.
I was surprised at how inexpensive the charges from his local telco were. (Unfortunately for me living in southern ohio has its disadvantages).
After that...you have a clean circuit between the two points. I haven't *yet* attempted to use a set of dsl modems though.
Anyone else tried this and had promising results *preferably with a little more technical details thrown into the mix*.
Unfortunately I am not well versed on the theories of time travel. But..light speed is not instantaneous. Light, like other energies/radiations take some amount of time to travel *the concept behind the measurement lightyear*.
Again, im not up to date on my sci-fi mumbo jumbo...but if I remember correctly...a worm hole is a fold in space. Your not actually traveling really fast..."there" just happens to be a lot closer to "here" by traveling through such a fold.
Forget me if I'm right, flame me if I'm wrong. (not logical...but were dealing with people)
I have personally felt the wrath of spam from @home. Everyday around lunch I would recieve more unwelcomed spam originating through the horrid depths of @home. I replied, complained and nearly cried as I could do nothing. I made doubley sure and verified that I was not the only user recieving these questionable spams...sure enough roughly 15 other subscribers to my isp were being spammaged. Unfortunately blocking the site entirely would have caused more problems with @home than it would have solved. In the end I tweaked our spam shield and since then "I" have not recieved an ounce of spam to this day.
The point of this is...I did attempt to contact @home on a at least 3 seperate occassions...I do not recall recieving one letter from any of thier support or administration personnel.
After working 7 months in technical support for an ISP I have to completely agree with you.
Customers can be abusive and sometimes just plain dumb (the magic number holds at abou 95 logged calls for one specific customer).
I find comic strips like UserFriendly hilarious and sometimes a little more realistic than any sane person would want to believe. If we can't take elements from our lives and compose a simple satire than why are we keeping this dreaded scurge on the earth known as comedy around.
Humor comes in many forms and is experienced differently by everyone. Our reactions are based from past experience meshed with our personal tastes. Every type of comedic act is definately not going to be funny to everyone and that is the way it is. We only have to remember one thing, comedy ceases to be comedy when it no longer entertains but becomes a tool for demeaning others. IMHO userfriendly and most strips have not come to this point.
Maybe I am not the most experienced slashdotter, but I do think some people are missing the point of it all. Money is definately not the center of the universe.
If you want to give back to the community, a community I might mention that has provided me with a very stable os and tools, then release your code under that very same license (generaly gpl).
If your only concern is about losing wealth, the decision is really quite simply, then don't do it.
Personally I don't have a problem with commercial software or closed source products. Just please be up front...if your concern is to make a profit, fine, be honest.
The point is, while the BSD license grants an individual more control over his product, freedom on the side of the consumer is notably lost.
As I've heard television repeat many times before..."Woh Nellie!" Just stop right there and think about this for a minute.
There are some good signs here...it seems they are questioning the ethics of their work (all science and no ethical base is a bad thing). Ask yourself...is science so great...is man so great...as to wield the power of creation. We can't seem to feed our starving population or house the homeless. There are people dying everyday from the machines we built to make our lives better.
I am not saying science is wrong or that we should stop all efforts to continue on with research and developement in all things scientific. What I am saying is this...we've got problems we can barely manage now...are we responsible enough as a people to wield the wand of creation and wave it about.
What horrors will we bring to this earth before some good comes of it.
Obviously your going to see more of this, the web is growing vastly more popular with every passing day, especially with everyone and thier uncle attempting to package the web in a nice little gift wrapped box for sale. Although I should probably be more worried about the ramifications of being able to search though countless fields of speech...I am actually more concerned with a different aspect of this new means of indexing. My concern is this, with each new means of indexing speech and text becoming readily avaible could this reault in web sites being aggressivly taxed by indivduals/machines not even barely using these services. Granted these are just my simple uniformed worries with little merit. Although it would be interesting to see the results if a slew of these technologies developed and became devastating popular.
