  1. overview of molyneux's career on Molyneux's Fabled Fable Finally Close To Release · · Score: 1

populous is defined as a game in which you play a god, with the ability to sculpt terrain, buildings, or feelings of your minions and thus indirectly affecting the outcome of their actions in some way.

populous - its like sim city 3. youre a god. your actions have indirect results.

    populous 23 etc - populous

theme park - populous, except the consequences of your actions become even more obscure. what will happen if i put a hamburger stand here? perhaps in the time it would take to write my masters thesis i could figure which actions create what effect on my park. granted, i can see how someone might possibly enjoy this type of game but then again its the type of people that love to play populous over and over.

syndicate - i'd be inclined to think that this had nothing to do with molyneux. because it was a rad game. specifically, what you want to happen usually happens unless you make a mistake.

magic carpet - i played this demo on a demo cd. even though it isn't memorable to me at all, simply seeing it in action puts me in the 95th percentile of gamers. one thing we can say about this guy in his favor is that he doesn't give up. kind of like an overhyped derek smart.

dungeon keeper - populous indoors. except this time your people have rpgish levels and the job is to kill people rather than just expand. also i remember you had to like pick up gold and creatures with a hand cursor. i vaguely recall liking this game.

black and white - a poorly executed version of populous. what the fuck is happening? why is it happening? the answer is i dont care.

fable - i find it interesting that in the ~5 minutes of my life that i devoted to looking at fable websites, not one told me what the game was about. its a story based rpg or a black and white clone or a totally open ended morality based rpg reality simulator or... fuck it its just another populous

  2. A counterpoint on Is Microsoft Money Crushing Microsoft? · · Score: 1

This month's issue of Scientific American has a lengthly article on Microsoft's research division including an interview with Bill Gates. Its general conclusion is that Microsoft has one of the biggest pure computer science research labs ever. Apparently they have wooed some big names in the CS field to do research for their unit. It even likens what they are doing to the work Xerox PARC did back in the early 80s that ended up being the foundation for modern computing.

I rather trust Scientific American, so blame them instead of me...

  4. Good luck on Good Online FPS Games/Servers For Beginners? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm probably too late for anyone to read this, but let me just throw some stuff up because this is an interesting topic.

The "casual" online gamer is not going to be rewarded in the majority of online games. If you want something fun to play online "for a half an hour now and then when [you are] bored" I suggest either Yahoo games or a different hobby. FPS's and MMORPG's are dominated by people with nothing but time on their hands. And the hard and fast rule of getting skill in any competition is that it takes a lot of time to become skilled. A casual gamer is going to be "owned" because he simply is not going to be able to compete with the hard core gamers. This fact, combined with the presence of many people who are not graicous winners, insures that online gaming won't be very fun for the casual gamer. However, if you are committed to this style of play perhaps there are some alternitives which hopefully I will be able to iterate.

*Try playing a mod of your game of choice. Preferably one that simply changes a few of the game's core rules. The reason for this is that hardcore gamers hate change. They have worked very hard to obtain their level of skill and they dont like it when their game is messed with. You want to be playing with a population of gamers that are roughly at your level of skill for it to be fun. You may find that the people that play mods are friendlier as well.

*Play on servers with restrictive rules and omnipresent admins. Gamers generally have foul mouths online. A server with rules against profanity or racial slurs will usually not be populated with hardcore gamers. Thus you get a good server to play in with players of average skill who aren't playing to call each other "fag" and what not. Homelan runs servers like this for many different games.

*Like other posters have said: be nice. If you can find a group of people that are friendly towards you and that you are comfortable with it will make any game that much better. Online gaming doesn't have to include social alienation.

*Play new games. Older games almost always have a high population of hardcore gamers who don't take kindly to newbies and casual gamers. Again, it just isn't fun to play a FPS where you are constantly dominated.

The basic rule for FPS's is that you need to find the server which works for you. Shop around until you find a server where you are comfortable playing on. It will make your online experience much better.

  5. Best screams ever? on History of a Famous Star Wars Scream · · Score: 2, Informative

Not being a huge Star Wars fan, I have no idea what this story is about. But I'm going to have to guess that whoever did the screaming can hardly compare to the best screamer of our time, the godfather of soul, the legendary James Brown. This is a man who has filled our hearts with joy through his screaming over the years, and I suggest that we honor him over this holiday season. Who can forget the screams he gave us; the subtle "WHOOOO", the energetic "GOOD GOD", and the classic "WHOOO ALRIGHT, YEAH ALRIGHT". In a history of screams, it is hard to underestimate the enourmous influence this one man has had on the genre.

  6. Try cdbaby.com on Digital Music Stores Reviewed · · Score: 5, Interesting

Ive said it before and ill say it again, cdbaby.com kicks ass. They let you listen to 2 minutes of 5-7 songs off an album to see if you like it, if you do buy it, if not go on to the next one! All their albums are reviewed by the editors to give you description of what the music is like. Plus, after your first purchase, they send you a free cd with each purchase thereafter (usually a mix cd which is pretty good.)

Disclaimer: all though this read like an ad, its not. Im just a satisfied customer.

This is a great alternative to emusic and such pay for play setups where you waste a quota trying to find music you like.

  7. Biggest problem with windows security on Looking Back At Windows Security In 2003 · · Score: 5, Funny

There's a new worm out there that exploits a security hole still in Windows 2k/XP from when it was released.

It has the capability to shut down applications, goes right through anti-virus software (even the latest patches!!!), and gives total control of the victim computer to the creator of the worm.

An attempt by the powers that be to shut down it's source of updates was thwarted by various government agencies and the worm itself.

Unfortunately there is no patch to get rid of the W32.MS.AutoUpdateRequired worm.

  8. Answer me this on Interview: Anti-Censorware Activists Answer · · Score: 1

For a site that is supposedly pro free speech, the arguments it presents are pretty one sided. We never hear from pro-censorship advocates. And whenever someone says something contrary to the /. opinion that post is immediatly moderated down. It'd be nice if some other opinons could actually be heard for once. Perhaps if Microsoft bought slashdot we could finally hear some fair and unbiased news about windows...

  10. Why is this test so wrong? on More Bad News From The Hellmouth · · Score: 1

Most of the geeks at my school are morons and possiably dangerous, and should be taken out of the general population. I'd feel safer knowing that this test is doing its work, and possiable instigators are being watched.

We allready have a well established system of hazing and harassment in high school. All an administrator has to do is find the students who are routinely bullied, and watch them to find your future killers.

Listen up geeks. You are being picked on for a REASON. Different is not nessicarily good, and anyone with any intelligence knows that it's easier to go with the flow. Stop trying to be different.

I know this is going to be tough for some readers, but life just isn't fair. There's just not anything you can do about it.
