  1. Re:May I Be The First to Ask... on Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided Ships · · Score: 1

I loved those books as a kid but Drizzt's name does sound odd -- like some kind of weather condition:

"It'll be cool and cloudy on Saturday with a 30% chance of drizzt in the evening."

  2. There's no justice in this world. on Rick Berman: Enterprise May Not Suck Next Year · · Score: 5, Interesting

They kill off Firefly halfway through the first season but let Enterprise go on for three years. Shheesh.

  3. Re:MPlayer on Slashback: TIPS, FatWallet, MPlayer · · Score: 1

I'm grateful someone took the time to write a media player for Linux like MPlayer -- but as a new/intermediate Linux user, I must say I find it a bit frustrating to use. After an hour or two of reading through the documentation, I finally had it working only to break it as soon as I tried to tweak something. Now I can't get it to work at all.

On a related note, does anyone now if MPlayer can record audio from a TV tuner? I've had pretty bad luck with this so far as well.

  4. Re:Oh the irony, it burns on Why Japan Gets the Cool Stuff · · Score: 1

    But it cuts both ways.

As an American who has spent several years in Europe, I've noticed this sentiment on occasion (i.e. Americans have access to the cheapest/newest/best technology or movies or whatever and people in other countries have to wait or settle for inferior products). While this may be true in some cases, (I shudder every time I remember being forced to pay Deutsche Telekom per minute for internet access) by and large I think the rest of the world gets to take the best* things/ideas from the American system while at the same time retaining the advantages of their own culture (public transportation, maybe health care, a longer history, etc).

    * Although I question some of the "American" things people in other countries choose to embrace. - I mean, you have to worry about a country where David Hasselhoff can reach the top of the pop charts.

  5. As long as I can see my own information. on Just How Much Privacy Do We Have? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The lack of privacy is disturbing, but it wouldn't be as bad if I could at least access all the information people are collecting about me. For example, I'd actually be curious to see what I buy at the grocery store (and maybe the time of day, season, etc. when I buy it) over a 6-month period.
