The way things are going, I'll be very disappointed if the tech isn't built in to the very people assigned to the beat 7 years down the road.
mod me down! off topic, whatever. my troll is off, so an OT will hafta do. thank you.
You could also backup everyday. And use that to restore when you install a bad program.
Yessiree Bob! I'll take that option.. I use PowerQuest's Drive Image 5.0 whenever I get a bad case of the "freebies" and it takes about 4 or 5 minutes to completely re-image my Win2K partition... it's a kludgy way to remove the spies, but so far 100% reliable and generally quick enough. Obviously this solution sucks when I've got two or three big apps (that I want to keep) installed without an image update.. Hope that's somehow useful.
I'll be there, with bells on and a pointy hat. Those gov't dickwads need to be told whassup in no uncertain terms, else they'll make us into a Yankee vassal..
Flame me if I'm completely utterly obliviously wrong, but back in the very early DOS days the hardware limit was a non-issue - trying to "get around" those hardware limitations came much later; himem.sys and the gang were basically a kludge. Backward compatibility being all the rage at the time. DOS was written in a non-scalable fashion, thusly necessitating the use of high memory managers to fool appz written for the 640 limit. Did Gates even write DOS? I seem to recall otherwise..
(If you were Disney, would you put a subtitled film in theaters? hah...)
The obvious answer is NO, but think carefully about this one.. the audience for PM isn't really little kids. "Daddy what are the toadstools doing? Why is the moose head in a jar? Why this, that and the rest????? Why Why why!!!"
So in this case I'd say a subtitled version is OK from Disney point of view.
THen again, look at Crouching Tiger... it did quite well, and I'm sure glad THAT one wasn't dubbed!
i've left out a bunch.. who cares. peace out
Fair enough, you liked the dub.. Claire Danes sexy voice started rubbing on your ears, got a little fiesty, gnawed a little, and then all of a sudden.... uhh. I hated the dub.
Watch it sub-titled and I think you'll agree: it was butchered.
I hope and pray that there won't be a dub of this.. have you seen Princess Mononoke?? They butchered it. OTOH Ninja Scroll was primo; was that a dub, or was it animated for the English market to begin with?
I think that if you look carefully, you'll find that free choice makes a muddle out of ANYthing.. just look at those Brits: somebody let 'em drive on the wrong side of the road, and now they're all fucked in the head. Then look at the Yanks: somebody let them carry guns and start wars, and their beer brewing skills went all to hell.
I think you'll agree that from a logical perspective that this precocious tenet of basic humanity has no place in our world.
Problem statement: If everyone uses a different skin, then you're lost if you use someone else's computer.
Obvious solution: Have multiple accounts on same machine. Or, alternatively, tell idiots to go sit on a flag-pole, or buy own damned machine. Assumption: anybody I let near my machine will be intelligent enough to figure it out. I don't care about their immediate productivity. Same goes for me when I need to use somebody else's box.
What the article says: Obvious solution not mentioned. It is assumed that you Raskin is sitting on a flag-pole. Your subconscious chokes. Bad bad bad. UI expert conclusion: erase image from mind.
What the article should have pointed out: retards have no place playing with my computer. Period. That said, there's no logical reason left why I shouldn't tweak my GUI as I see fit. Take away my freedom to meddle in my own affairs, and I'll buy beer instead of your product.
In the real world some of us like to customize our vehicular transportation modules as much as we like custom UI - and in fact, I'm probably a hundred times faster with my customized setup than with the default: there is no illusion of speed here, as all gains have been substantiated by years of building motor memory.
Make no mistake about it, there is much value in changing default GUI to match one's personal preferences - unless you trust the dingos who build wishy-washy default configurations for you more than your years of ingrained habits. I'll concede that some people's habits are poor, but then again, mine are extremely good. I'm somewhat of a power user, with shortcut knowledge and I resent anybody's interference with my extremely efficient system.
Make sure your anti-viral software works with Citrix! It might seem obvious, but you'll probably hafta go expensive enterprise AV if you wanna have your Windoze virus-free... OTOH if you use Veritas backup the AV is generally built-in, and with your thin client philosophy you probably don't want any unauthorized apps running. my 2 cents: Citrix is nifty but setup can be a bitch.

The GUI *is* geared for the totally incompetent user. Who else would purchase a MAC in the first place??? Get a clue.
No, it's CLEARLY pronounced "Austin" as in the Texan city. AUSTIN! Say it slowly a hundred times and you'll get the hang of it.
