  1. Re:The "bad movies" fallacy--Critics on Bad Movies to Blame for Box Office Slump · · Score: 1

Who the heck listens to critics???

In truth I quit bothering simply because in documented cases they were just paid shills. I personally don't find the movies pumped out of Hollywood with a few exceptions worth the effort to go to the movie theatre. Critic's giving the "Longest Yard" remakes high marks? Please! Or the ones who raved about Dukes of Hazzard. They should be ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!

Near me not only is it the experience of the Cell Phone idiots and the kids (which can be avoided some if you don't go right away and do early matinee's like I do, being self employeed has a few perks after all). The fact I have to sit through 10-20 minutes worth of ads be it direct commercials or movie trailers stinks.

In the last year I have gone to about 15 movies where as I used to go once a week. I just don't find much worth my time. Very few films have a real story and even the action films seem trying to hard!

I mean seriously when I saw them use Jessica Simpson as Daisy Duke and Burt Reynolds as Boss Hog for that bad Dukes of Hazzard remake my first thoughts were "No way in hell" and "I had no idea Burt was THAT broke".

At the moment I will see Serenity in a few days and then likely Harry Potter in November followed with Narnia and perhaps King Kong but so far those are the ONLY things looking even mildly interesting.

  2. ACECAD USB Digital Clipboard Memopad on Best PDA for College? · · Score: 1

I found that for a lot of my consulting work keeping notes on plain old paper suits me best, however I make a lot of diagrams, notes and sketches. The beauty of it is you have a backup paper hard copy and another version which you can import into my computer where I get to add them to various items.

There are two versions of this gizmo the 501 and 692. Major difference between DigiMemo 692 & A501

    • Max. Paper Size (L x W): 692 - 9.1 x 6.0 in. (232 x 153 mm); A501 - 8.3 x 5.9 in. (211 x 150 mm)
    • Built-in Storage Size: 692 - 32MB; A501 - 8MB

It's an interesting solution that just might suit how you run things. The only trouble is it's not pocket size.

  3. Time & Chaos 6 on Where is the Killer Calendar? · · Score: 1

I myself use Time & Chaos 6 from http://www.chaossoftware.com/ It sync's with my ancient but still servicable Palm IIIxe. I particularly like how you can customize fields for contacts, track to-do's as done for a history. I also use the Activity Series to create standard sets of events when I initiate a sales contact and for tracking customer statisfaction. I would like to see this use a better websync ability other than their proprietary usage but this is a good solution for me and my consulting business. I like the billing addon which helps me track hours on specific projects for billing as well.

Given the price this is effective and reasonable software. I will admit it's not perfect and I would love to have events that stretched over multiple days rather than having to copy an event over the period of days, but that's really a minor consideration. In a small workgroup this works quite well for my office (there are 4 of us) co-ordinating meetings and checking each other's schedules.

Give it a try, you may find this works better for you. It's not free software, but it is quality shareware by a good company.

  4. if you want VB on Linux why not just use REALBasic on Free IDE Gambas Reaches 1.0 · · Score: 2, Interesting

Consider that already REALBasic 5.5 is loads ahead of this project in that much of the syntax is VB like, yet you can release one app simulataneously on Mac OS 9, OS X, Windows and Linux.

I don't see the advantage here... sure it's not free software but it works DAMN well. I have created a few small utilites internally for my company as well as a little CD Cataloging program just to teach myself the ins and outs of the language, but for those times I want to make something run as a non-web based application for a Mac, this is how I plan to develop the software.

  6. Tool Pen - Handy on When Word Processors Are Out: What's The Best Pen? · · Score: 1

I use one of the Key Grip Corp Tool Pens most of the time for a manual pen. Often I find when working on remote systems I need to make notes on part numbers, or a quick schematic sketch. So far this one has served me very well. The pen cartridge inside the tool is a Space pen and the full retail for this gadget is usually about $25.00 or so. The fact that it doubles as a phillips or standard screwdriver for me is a godsend.

  7. Programming Problems on What Kind of Books do You Want? · · Score: 1

I am working now as a teacher for both ROP and Adult education. What I really could use are classic samples for programming that has a set of logical problems to introduce programming concepts and build. I normally start with the standard "Hello World" to Calculators, address books, Network message clients and say a Tic-Tac-Toe game with AI. However, I could use more idea's for a school setting.

If you included code, Python or VB would be really welcome but I am not so much interested in the heavy details as I am in staged concepts, perferably ones that aren't boring as h***.

Berkeley invented LSD and Unix, and I don't think that's a coincidence.
