    Joe, an IT specialist

Ever since we've made the switch to Windows XP, boxes have been crashing left and right and now I'm busier than I ever have been. When we were running Unix boxes, I rarely had anything to do, and that looked bad to upper management.

Selma, a tech support team member

You know, ever since we've replaced our Macs, we've been bombarded with user interface questions and how to get rid of that annoying Clippy. Upper management has been noticing how busy we've been lately and now we're getting more money for our department. Sweet!

    >I've always understood that you bid exactly what you are willing to pay for an item

OK, then explain something to me. Doesn't the effect of shill bidding imply you WILL the maximum amount (or close to) for the item? Others say "well, that's the way it works, expect to pay what your maximum is.". If so, then what's the freakin point of an Ebay auction? I mean, isn't the point of an auction is trying to get a low a price as possible in competing with someone? Shill bidding goes around the core philosophy of auctioning (ie, cheating) and forces you to pay the maximum amount (or close to it) you've set initially by forcing an inevitable outcome.

For example, if an item starts at $100 and generally is sold at $600, then it would be easy to figure someone's maximum bid and shill bid (say the seller for example) to gain a few hundred $$ easy, right? Without the shill bid, an auction could result in a much lower final bid, right?

If the maximum amount you put in is what some expect you to pay, then why go through the auction bull**** and just come out and say "I'll pay $x for this, take it or leave it." If I'm wrong in this analysis, please tell me where I went wrong...

  3. OT: What if I want BSD for my desktop on Overview of the BSDs · · Score: 2, Interesting

    To all:

I know this is off-topic, but I figured this would be the time to ask, and my intention is sincere not to inflame or get points, so here goes...

I know BSD is usually used as a server, but what if I want to use it as a desktop computer? Where can I get an office suite? Photo editor? Games? Does this OS have support for NVidia cards? USB support? How much USB support? USB drivers from vendors spotty? Or was BSD not intended to support these items?

Yes, and the spyware model of how this software interacts with the user/computer may forecast how DRM is accepted.

I personally know many people who see spyware installed on their computer and think this was a typical upgrade by Microsoft. They look at what www.xupiter.com does (DONT GO TO THIS SITE, BTW) and think this is just a normal mode of operation. They REALLY DONT HAVE A CLUE that they have been taken over!

Result for someone who does know? I have to run AdAware almost every day now. Even that doesn't work against xupiter, as I have to manually uninstall that through regsvr32 and regedit! There may not be any recourse with DRM... For anyone who does know what's happening, it will be like salmon swimming upstream.

This is exactly how DRM is going to work. One silent install at a time. The only way to defeat DRM is all-out education of the sixpacks to let them know what they're giving up. They have to know that eventually control over their property is going to go away.

Using your analogy, Columbus should never have gone so far out to America... It was extremely risky and had too many unknown quantities.

We don't need to question or answer going to Mars. We HAVE to go to Mars eventually (plus or minus two billion years before the Sun grows too large :-).

    1) I consider Mars as a "backup" for civilization. One mad scientist or group of fanatics AND (one engineered supervirus OR H-bomb) = no more civilization. Period. With a thriving colony on Mars or beyond, mankind could survive even if the whole Earth is taken out.

    2) Moving to other environments would diversify the species in ways we haven't considered yet. Instead of stagnating, we could open up new avenues for the human race.

    3) I'm so sick of the whining about "oh, there's less atmosphere", "it's too cold", "it's too far", "we don't have the technology yet", "why do we have to go". Hell, we know FAR FAR FAR more about what it takes to get to Mars than Columbus knew when he sailed eastward. Hell, half were betting he would fall off the earth! Yet he went. We need more Columbus types and less whining fall off the earth types.

    4) Although many feel that we have to leave the planet before the Sun grows into a red gas giant, but has anyone considered the possibility of the Sun's output fluctuating way before that? What if it cranks up the heat just enough to cause massive climatic damage? Do we KNOW FOR SURE that this will NOT happen?

I think we either go to Mars or stagnate and die.

Funny, NONE of these, nor any other TV show, compel me to drop everything and run to get an HDTV compatible TV.

Simpsons in HDTV? Homer's face never looked so clear. Watch those Chevy olympic ads for the 1 billionth time (don't forget the loads of ice dancing for those demographics) in high definition? Am I paying for better advertisement viewing? Watch those same HBO/Showtime movies over and and over and over and over and over again? Buffy?
