Quote from the Business Week article, linked above: "It isn't clear whether or not AT&T CEO David Dorman, who will earn about $20 million from the sale of AT&T, will stick around."
So, a manager who presided over the failure of his company made $30 million (not $20 million) from selling the company to other managers who are reputed to be just as inept.
The Wikipedia article says, "Dorman's management finesse can be ascertained by tracking the value of AT&T stock during his tenure.". Dorman became president in 2000, Wikipedia says. The stock performance tanked beginning just before that, and continued down until the AT&T name was sold to SBC.
It looks from the stock quotes that AT&T is doing well now, but apparently that is only because the AT&T name was pasted on a new company. (It's like unscrewing the radiator cap and driving a different car underneath. That's not real car repair.)
AT&T is not AT&T now, because the name was sold to an abusive west coast telephone company named SBC.
My understanding is that everything else of value in the original AT&T was sold piece-by-piece, and SBC bought mostly just the name. My understanding is that the SBC trademark was worse than useless because the company is so abusive. So, the managers bought another name.
Apparently, for $16 Billion SBC got AT&T's VOIP customers, and the AT&T name.
AT&T's VOIP customers were Sheila and Gerald Funk, who have since moved to Elbonia. Wait... That last sentence my contain an error.
So, what we are seeing is SBC mismanagement under a new name. Soon just saying the name AT&T will cause people to become upset.
We need to wait for all those dinosaur top managers to retire.
Practically every business I know is managed by someone who started managing before the personal computer revolution. It surprises me, but in more than a decade they don't seem to have learned anything. They hit blindly without understanding what they are doing, or even caring what they are doing.
We are seeing in our culture HUGE disrespect for technically knowledgeable people. The wild imaginings of someone who knows nothing are considered better than the counsel of those who have learned how things work.
You said, "... I have never ever seen the behaviour you have described,
except..."
You said, "Sorry, but this is just pure anti-Windows BS."
A) You are not sorry.
B) Your statements are quite arrogant, since you are saying that if
you have never seen a problem, it doesn't exist.
C) Follow the links: Firefox development sometimes resembles playing. There are numerous
links, leading back to several years ago. I suppose you have never joined the
discussions of Firefox instability.
D) Basically, this seems to be the story. Winifred
Mitchell Baker, the CEO of Mozilla, is a socially uncomfortable lawyer who
became CEO when no one thought there was an opportunity. Now Mozilla
Foundation is making millions from designating Google as the default search
engine.
Winifred has insufficient control over those who work for her, because
she doesn't understand what they do. The Firefox CPU hogging and memory
gobbling bug would take some serious troubleshooting to find, and no one wants
to do the work, apparently.
The bug in Firefox is apparently caused by inadequate allocation of
resources. Apparently there is a bug in Windows, or more than one, that causes
the entire Microsoft Windows OS to become unstable when Firefox starts CPU
hogging.
In any case, the only way to get Windows back to a stable state after
killing Firefox is to re-start the computer.
The Firefox CPU hogging bug occurs only during heavy use of Firefox,
with many Windows and tabs open for several hours, such as happens when
someone in purchasing in a corporate environment is researching computer
parts. The problem is made worse if the computer is hibernated or put in
standby.
Yes, clearly Tuaturas are more advanced than humans. On the second page of the linked article it says that Tuaturas have methods of avoiding aggression. Humans, on the other hand, kill other humans over anything that will make money, like restricting the supply of oil to make more profit.
"Or you could say, just kill the process in Windows."
Yes, and after killing the Firefox CPU hogging process, the ENTIRE OS is unstable.
The founders of the K12Linux project were the kind of people who will always have work. They enjoyed reducing the workload as much as possible. A lot of the discussion of Windows comes from people who wouldn't have a job if Windows weren't so difficult to maintain.
Yes, congratulations. However, they are building on years of effort by the Kindergarten to 12th grade
Linux project, and other such projects. The K12Linux Project was
originally started for the Multnomah
County Education Service District, using hardware donated by Intel. (Intel
does some of its processor design in a big facility which is also in Portland,
Oregon, USA.)
Perhaps 8 years ago, one of the founders of the K12Linux project told me that
the total cost of maintenance of Linux was less than half that of Windows.
(He gave a figure much less than half, but I don't remember the actual figure.)
My experience with Windows is that it is sloppily coded, and lots of things
cause Windows to need maintenance. For example, the CPU hogging bug in
Firefox, which seems to be worse in Firefox version 2.0.0.4, sometimes causes
Windows XP Professional SP2 to become unstable and require re-starting the
computer. When Firefox hogs the CPU under Linux, it is only necessary to kill
Firefox. Linux remains stable.
If Microsoft paid schools $100 per copy to take Windows, the cost of
Windows would still be far higher than K12Linux.
The K12Linux Project home page gives links to other Linux-in-schools
projects, also.
A side benefit of Linux is that it is much more secure, partly because
of its design, and partly because students are less likely to know how to
tinker with it, I was told.
It is far easier to maintain a terminal server with
numerous simple terminals, than separate stand-alone computers, too, and Linux
is fast enough to be used that way.
I feel a little uncomfortable with what I said above, because I am
vastly understating the savings of using Linux rather than Windows. Microsoft
can't even make "Microsoft Genuine Advantage" work correctly; that is a
GENUINE disadvantage of Windows. (I am using the word
"genuine" in its honest sense, not in its abusive public relations spin sense.)
Another problem with a Windows system is hiring people who are willing
to work with products from a company such as Microsoft that is so abusive. It's tiring
to work with abusiveness.
Again, I still feel uncomfortable because I am understating
the case. My company has had considerable trouble with error messages
from Windows Update, for example. We've had about 8 different kinds of
problems, some of which have required hours to solve. Judging from the
many, many complaints on the newsgroup, there seem to be many other kinds of Windows Update
problems we haven't had.
People who work in IT sometimes like Microsoft because the
sloppy Microsoft products give them more work.
It's not a dupe. It's a backup, to assure reliability. Here's a backup of my comment to the earlier story:
The big loser is Gateway. Would you buy a
Gateway computer after reading the Slashdot article?
An appeal means that the case is no longer in small claims court. Both
parties can then hire a lawyer. An appeal means that Gateway exposes itself to more attention.

In my opinion, there is a lot of misunderstanding about Microsoft. People get confused, and think Microsoft is a software company that is abusive. But maybe a better explanation is that Microsoft is an abuse company that uses software as its vehicle to deliver abuse.
REAL managers can make a profit without being adversarial. Managers who have difficulty thinking carefully must work for abusive companies.
Someone meets Zarf (Slashdot member number 5735) at a party, learns that Zarf is involved with computers, and says, "What computer manufacturer do you recommend?" Zarf says, "Above all, stay away from Gateway."
I agree. However, I feel uncomfortable with the fact that most people who try to reason about the destruction of the ideals and reputation of their country use normal logic, when the logic of mental illness is sometimes more powerful.
Once someone begins killing for money they find themselves unable to stop, and their killing becomes bolder and bolder.
If you love the U.S., you will help her in her time of need. My help is a summary of some of the most important points of Bush administration corruption: George W. Bush comedy and tragedy.
One way those who want corruption in government achieve their goals is finding ways to prevent intelligent people from being elected, and helping un-intelligent people be elected.
