I hope companies will see this for what it is: An attempt by Microsoft to do with a license trick what they are not able to accomplish with product quality.

There is a social breakdown happening at Microsoft. Bill Gates is, apparently, no longer interested. The company is becoming more and more unable to complete projects.

Microsoft never competed very well on technological merits, but now things are becoming worse. People think that Microsoft has been successful, but the company's success has always depended on tricking customers who don't have much technical knowledge. As customers become more technically knowledgeable, they realize more and more that Microsoft is adversarial.

It's not that there is specific information about hacking Diebold ATMs. It's that there is so much information indicating that Diebold is not interested in security.

You completely missed the point. You apparently didn't watch the HBO movie, and haven't been reading about Diebold events. The voting machines are computers, and it is easy to program them to give results. In 2003, the Diebold CEO said he was "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to (President Bush) next year.". 7. Part of the problem is inconvenience. on A Security Guide For Non-Technical Users? · · Score: 1

The problem of users not cooperating with security rules is largely a social problem, not a technical one, and needs social investigation.

We found that one of the biggest reasons people don't cooperate is that it takes too long to report problems, and they don't want the inconvenience.

We wrote a program that sends a screen copy to us by email when the user presses Windows_Key-F11. That makes it easy to get users to report problems that show some evidence on the screen.

If it is easy to report problems, the feeling of cooperation grows and eventually users learn that cooperation benefits them. Online bug reporting software helps, too.

If your Windows XP computer is not part of a domain, and you use Microsoft's Encrypting File System (EFS), you could lose everything you have encrypted! Microsoft is a truly heartless company, I think, because there is no warning about this, even though it has been discussed with Microsoft employees many times.

CP/M is Control Program for Microcomputers, an OS used with 8088 microprocessors back before IBM thought of selling PCs. It was a dog of an OS, mostly because it was unfinished. Back then CP/M was sold by a company that thought printing the original of manuals on a dot-matrix printer with an old ribbon was acceptable practice.

The Morrow Microdecision came with a Command Line Interface language called Pilot that was in many ways better than the CLI that comes with Windows XP. I suppose Microsoft's plan is never to supply a finished OS so people will always want new versions.
