The "signal ground" is important because there are wires from the power supply that allow the motherboard to control the power supply. That's the "signal". Probably it would be best not to connect those lines to the motherboard, but to install a separate switch for the hard drives.
I'm hoping someone with some experience with this will discuss it.
The question is, can two cheap power supplies be used in standard case? The question is NOT whether you can pay $2000 for special equipment.
Obviously both power supplies would be attached to the case with the standard screws. That would provide a hundreds amps worth of common ground connection. Obviously the black signal ground wires would need to be connected to each other with a small additional wire.
I am a real electronics design engineer. I can't think of any reason why this would not work. It would probably be necessary to shut off the power to the hard drives separately.
There would be a little common mode noise, however this is something that the signal ICs in the hard drives can handle.
I've had really bad experiences with early Silicon Image based controllers. Those Koutech controllers use Silicon Image chipsets. Is Silicon Image better now?

Office Depot had an 18th anniversary sale, and was selling Maxtor 60GB drives for $18 after rebate. Bought three for my personal test machines, and used my friend's addresses for the rebates.
I often hear bad things about Maxtor drives, but after a whole 40 hours use, they haven't failed once.
It seems to me it should be possible to put another power supply in the case and power the extra drives from that. Most modern BIOS versions allow specifying a delay on the hard drive spin-up. Just put the power-on connector in parallel with the main power supply connector. I don't like Antec cases much, or those from any manufacturer, but some full tower Antec cases have room for a second power supply.
But a case with a lot of drives and a motherboard needs a lot of air-moving equipment.

Here's a simple program that would benefit the whole world:
Make a program that shows what parts of a huge folder fit on individual CDs or DVDs. The output of the program would say, for example, that all the files from sub-folders A to Information would fit on the first CD, and all the files from sub-folders Installers to Netgear would fit on the second CD, and so on.
It is necessary to store backup sub-folders in alphabetical order on the backup CDs or DVDs because then they can be found easily.
Right now there is no good way to decide how to apportion the data. Breaking any file into two pieces just causes problems later, so the Easy CD Creator method does not work well.
Later, it would be excellent if the program made.ISO files, of course, and even more excellent if the program asked the user to insert a CD or DVD, and burned the media.

To get votes from Jews in the United States, U.S. politicians go into the Jewish community and declare their "support for Israel". That's code for support for Israeli violence. Many politicians don't care about the morality of their actions. They don't care whether U.S. government support for Israeli violence is actually good for Jews. They just want the vote.
Non-Jewish United States citizens never hear about this support for foreign wars. It isn't a secret; it's on Pataki's web site. But it is effectively a secret, because no one tells U.S. citizens that they are engaging in a war that will definitely cause them to be attacked.
There is a one-sentence record in ancient Jewish texts, that are now part of the Christian Bible, that a Pharoah of Egypt had some complaint against the Jews about 3,200 years ago. Since then, at least every 200 years, the Jews have annoyed the surrounding cultures enough that they have been the targets of extreme violence. Certainly this is regrettable. Certainly something should be done about this. However, there is no evidence that anyone presently in power in the U.S. government has a sophisticated understanding of the problems, or any sensible ideas about how a nation thousands of miles from Israel could be helpful. In fact, it seems that U.S. government support for Jewish violence is like pouring "gasoline on a fire", as one Jewish leader said.
The U.S. government, at present, fully supports the use of violence to achieve its goals. Under George W. Bush, the U.S. government believes that it is okay to kill people and destroy their property even when the U.S. is not directly or immediately threatened.
Most U.S. citizens do not make the connection that a policy of violence supported by the U.S. government means that they will inevitably be attacked.
Quoting from the CNN article, here are some of Osama bin Laden's words: "And as I was looking at those towers that were destroyed in Lebanon [with U.S. government help], it occurred to me that we have to punish the transgressor with the same" he says, "and that we had to destroy the towers in America, so that they taste what we tasted and they stop killing our women and children."
If you live in Kalispell, Montana, USA, to pick a place at random, it is unlikely that you will be directly attacked by Arab terrorists. However, attacks on the U.S. affect you profoundly because they lower your quality of life, just as the U.S. attacks on Iraq lowered the quality of life there.
You said, "... there is a long, long, long list of people who are more
deserving of the credit that Gore would ascribe to himself."
Vint Cerf said that Al Gore deserves unique credit. Back in those
days, which are very difficult to remember now, you had to buy your floppy
disks from a special company, and they really were floppy.
Back then it was the raw, early, ugly days of computing. (Just like it
is now, with one big monopolist and proprietary file formats, and quirky,
partly finished software that wastes your time, like Windows XP SP2.)
Back then, there was no one who had power in the U.S. Congress besides Gore
understood anything technical. It's difficult to remember that now. Back then,
people just did not relate to computing issues. If you knew something about
computing, you were considered socially eccentric.
Back then, the ARPANET was thriving, but it was used by people who
considered themselves privileged, and were privileged, and definitely did not
want to share their privileges.
Back then, DARPA, the U.S. government's Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency would give ARPANET access to institutions and companies that were part
of the effort to find new and better ways to kill people and destroy their
property. Back then, it was perceived that there were enemies everywhere and
it was important to protect ourselves by waging all war all the time. (Just
like now.) It was called the "Cold" War. The U.S. government killed people,
but the killing had to be a secret from the average citizen.
Back then there was an extremely acrimonious discussion about a
new-fangled idea, the.COM top level domain. The privileged did not want their
utility to be corrupted by crass commercialism. Back then, it was difficult to
get spam. The ARPANET was an organization of gentlemen, who would never cause
problems for each other *cough* Mitnick.
Back then, there were not enough viruses for everyone; we had to
share. Back then systems were mostly not vulnerable, viruses were spread
through the honor system. Okay, that is a joke. It took Microsoft to invent
sloppily coded operating systems that would assure the widespread availability
of viruses. Unfortunately, that is not a joke.
Back then, there was a new-fangled gadget, the Hayes 2400 Baud modem,
which few could afford. There were fears that such high-speed use would cause
problems for the telephone system.
Al Gore had technical knowledge. Al Gore had power in government
because he was a senator and a famous senator's son. He put the full weight of
government behind the idea that just anyone could have access.
Did you ever try to get personal Internet access back in the ARPANET days? You could not. It was a private facility of large public institutions and big companies like Textronix.
Sure, you could shell into your company or government or educational account from home. But if you were just an average person, you could not get an account.

Congress to turn the ARPANET into the Internet.

according to Vint Cerf, Al Gore was the first public official to decide that
there should be a public utility called the Internet.

The parent comment says, "Support for Israel may be the greatest
cause of our problems." The king of Jordan says this is so. The foreign
minister of Iran says this is so. (They were both interviewed on the Charlie
Rose show.) Osama bin Laden said U.S. government support for Israeli violence
was one of the two reasons he attacked the United States. (The other reason was
U.S. government support for those who are against needed political change in
Saudi Arabia.)
The U.S. government has been supporting the killing of Arabs for many
years now by giving between 3.5 and 5 billion of your tax money to Israel,
every year. There are only 14 million Jews in the entire world. There
are only 4.8 million Jews in Israel. That money is about $1,000 for every man,
woman, child, and baby in Israel who is Jewish, every year.
That money must be used to buy weapons made in the United States, at
inflated prices. I seriously doubt that anyone who is in control of this
policy has anything against Arabs or Jews, or even knows much about their
cultures. It's government corruption, only that, not ideology.
Osama bin Laden says he wants a Muslim-religion-controlled political
coalition. I've studied the matter for years, and I don't think there is much
chance he can achieve that. The violent religious extremists in Muslim
countries are not crazier than the violent religious extremists in the United
States, however. The corruption caused by those who want weapons profits is
supported by some of those who call themselves evangelicals. The evangelicals
have an ugly plan that sounds to me like it might achieve a terrible goal.
They want to kill all the Jews. They don't say that, of course. They don't
take reponsibility for that. They say that their ancient books say that all
the Jews will be killed or converted. Since there is slim chance that Jewish
people would want to be evangelicals, or would be accepted by evangelicals,
they are really saying that all the Jews will be killed. They are helping
their prophecy by encouraging the 14 million Jews to get into bloody battles
with the 1.1 billion Muslims. Experiment: Go into a very poor area of the U.S.
and ask the next 10 street kids you see what they think the outcome of such
battles will be. I will accept whatever they say.
Abba Eban, a respected Jewish leader, said that after World War II
Jews were not welcome in Europe, even though they had suffered a lot. I agree
with that. Some Jewish violent extremists believe that Jews must fight for
their own land because they are not welcome elsewhere. That's not true, of
course; Jews do very well in making contributions to New York. The weapons
makers encourage the Jews in their worst impulses.
Your behavior is offensive.
What is worse is that you are pretending to know something about the subject, and thereby retarding a true discussion.

You should take bin Laden's statements with the greatest seriousness. In fact, the U.S. government has effectively declared war on Arabs and Muslims. Here is just one example: New York Governor Pataki's statements are equivalent to a declaration of war.

Experiment: Go into a very poor area of the U.S. and ask the next 10 street kids you see what they think the outcome of such battles will be. I will accept whatever they say.
Abba Eban, a respected Jewish leader, said that after World War II Jews were not welcome in Europe, even though they had suffered a lot. I agree with that. Some Jewish violent extremists believe that Jews must fight for their own land because they are not welcome elsewhere. That's not true, of course; Jews do very well in making contributions to New York. The weapons makers encourage the Jews in their worst impulses.

U.S. Gov.: Borrowing money to kill Iraqis. 140 billion borrowed. With interest, you pay 200 billion.
