The Slashdot story shows a lack of appreciation of the reality. Those who presently control the U.S. government think that it doesn't matter if the weapons work. In fact, it is more profitable for them if they don't. The weapons makers and those who profit from government oil contracts want all war, all the time.
The point I was trying to make is not that VPN technology should be combined with WiMax, but that it is an example of well-designed technology that causes few problems. Ethernet is another example.
The first USB version is an example of a badly designed technology. There were many devices that would not operate if they were more than 5 feet from the computer.
"Just do a search for "hardware VPN vulnerabilities" on Google and see what you get."
I did a Google search: hardware+VPN+vulnerability. There is nothing but some Cisco Concentrator vulnerabilities that I suppose Cisco fixed long ago.
Are hardware VPN's generally invulnerable? It's difficult to imagine a vulnerability with a pre-shared key and total encryption. The weak point might be when the VPN is first established, but the pre-shared key seems to make that strong, too.
Thinking about the presidential campaign has caused me to discover something I didn't know before. Most people have little idea of the activities of their government. Instead, they believe the sound bites.
I'm very sympathetic to the general direction of your comment. If you build it, hackers will come.
However, it is possible to design a secure system. My understanding is that VPN technology is secure, for example. I've asked around quite a lot, and no one I've talked to has heard of a vulnerability.
After the U.S. government bombing and the U.S. government support for violent regimes destabilized the country, other forces began to be violent. The record seems to indicate that the U.S. government activities were a strong contributory factor.
That's how it works. Violence breeds violence. It seems likely that the Bush war in Iraq will destabilize the region for decades.
"Both Carter and Clinton had/have lousy criminal brothers, and this fact had nothing to do with their presidency."
The Bush family fully supports "Neilsie", as they call him. And Neil is heavily involved in many corrupt activities.
When Billy Carter took money from the Libyans, there was an immediate apology from President Carter.
Did you see the network footage of George W. Bush holding hands with a Saudi
man the Bush family knows as "Bandar Bush"? Since it was Saudis who attacked
on 9/11, why did Bush invade Iraq? Was it a smokescreen to get attention away
from the Saudis? The Bush family had investments in weapons and oil, and war increases the opportunity for profit in both those areas. Read the books. The Bush family and friends and associates are heavily involved in issues of conflict of interest.
In Portland, Oregon, a friend mentioned that, before the last election,
there were no signs in the yards in the wealthy area where he lives. Now there
are seven Kerry/Edwards signs in the yards around his. There are no Bush
signs.
I began looking for Bush signs as I drive around my area. I've seen
none. There is at least one Kerry sign on each block, usually more.
I've heard that there are plenty of Bush signs in the rural areas of
the state.
Many people in the U.S. know very, very little about the activities in their
government. There are many very angry people. The ignorant and the angry are
easily manipulated. To them, for example, bombing for democracy makes sense.
During the Clinton years, I read the books that were published about
him. They said he was having sex with slutty women. They tried to find
something wrong with his small losing investment called Whitewater. They said
he may have, at some time during his being governor of Arkansas, associated
with people who later turned out to be involved in questionable activities. I
found the books interesting, but a little lame.
Now I've read the books about Bush. It's
amazing. The information about Bush is about severe corruption of government.
The negative information about George W. Bush seems endless. Just when
I think I know 10% of the corruption, I find more detail that shows I know
less than 1% of it. For example, George W. Bush's brother was shown in a
lawsuit deposition on 20/20 casually talking about his prostitutes and his use of government
influence to make money. This is Neil Bush talking about himself.
George H.W.
Bush was involved in the weapons business with a brother of Osama bin Laden.

Most media exists to make money. Advertisers are understandably
careful not to alienate anyone. It is not possible to develop an accurate
opinion of government activities only by listening to the carefully crafted
phrases from media employees who would lose their jobs if they seemed to
indicate a preference for one policy over another. It's necessary to read
books.
George Soros says, "President Bush
is endangering our safety, hurting our vital interests, and undermining
American values." If Dole had been elected instead of Clinton, the U.S.
would have had sensible leadership. This election is different. It is not a matter of which
candidate you like. If you vote for Bush, you are poorly informed. This is not a
claim that Kerry and Edwards are perfect. They represent, at minimum, a needed change.
sig: "Every nation that seeks peace has an obligation to help build [a freer] world." - GW Bush
Your forgot the other sentence: "You are either with us or against us." Which means, in this case: "We will bomb you if you are against us." Typical polarized alcoholic thinking.
Does killing Iraqis set them free? Or does it de-stabilize the country and invite hundreds of thousands of supporters for terrorists? The U.S. government did the same thing to Cambodia, and the country stayed destabilized for decades. Millions of people died after the U.S. government stopped bombing. There is plenty of evidence that this will happen in Iraq.
We found that the Promise controllers would sometimes work, also. The ATA100 controllers worked better than the newer ones for us. However, the 10 controllers together were the most unreliable hardware part I've ever seen.
The problems were only with controllers that had the hard drive with the boot partition.
We had perhaps 10 Promise controllers, and could not make them work under Windows XP. They work fine under Windows 98.
It is possible that Microsoft has done something to make software/hardware RAID controllers like Promise fail under Windows XP. That would mean more people would buy Windows Server. We tried another software/hardware RAID mirroring controllers, from HighPoint, and they had the same problem.
We also were not able to get any meaningful technical support from Promise Technology, even after months of asking.
(VPN is Virtual Private Network, for those who don't work with these things. A VPN allows a remote machine to behave as though it is connected to the local network.)
Have you ever heard of anyone breaking into a DES-encrypted VPN with a pre-shared key? I'm guessing it would be difficult.
The Radmin web site says Radmin is entirely encrypted.
Is a VPN safe and appropriate communication for VNC?
Is that true about the latest version of Radmin? This Radmin comparision with Real VNC says that Radmin communication is entirely encrypted. There is no option to disable encryption.

Alternative spam solution: Change the culture.

Here's another spam solution:
If we had a respected national leader who could often talk to millions of
people, that person could change the culture. The leader could tell everyone
never to buy anything or even respond to unsolicited email advertising.
It might take years, but eventually it would not be economic for spammers to
operate, particularly since spam filters would continue to improve.
The only person who could do this in the U.S. now would be Oprah Winfrey. She
has an enormous following, and has a reputation for positive thinking (and,
unfortunately, sometimes being ignorantly anti-male). She could tell her women
viewers, and ask them to tell everyone in their family.
If we had a positively-minded president, he or she would be in an excellent
position to change the email culture. A president could change the culture in
a few months, possibly. It would simply become socially unacceptable to
respond to unsolicited email.
If the spam culture change worked, the next thing I would like to see
is an open source reference browser that set standards for how browsers should
work. Unforunately, Bill Gates is not a positive leader, either. I would like
to see Mozilla become the U.S. national government standard. Anyone could
continue to use any browser they wanted, but the government's power could be
put behind web page rendering standards and browser quality.
My understanding is that Reagan ran up a big bill by asking for the "600 ship Navy". Reagan also spent a lot on the Star Wars Missile Defense, which was entirely government fraud, because it could not work with present technology.
My understanding is that Reagan did this to embezzle money for his friends in the weapons industry. Both of these programs were entirely government corruption.
Note that the last few presidents have come from alcohol-influenced families: Reagan was an ACOA. George H.W. Bush is an ACOA. Clinton is an ACOA. (Adult Child of Alcoholics) George W. Bush is an alcoholic.
It amazes me how little people know about the activities of their government. Here are facts that are important now:
