    Those are LUSERS.
    They have a two-bit wisdom, thinking that socialism is good, corporations are bad. Thinking is alien for LUSERS. The only source for morale they got are Ten Commendments. There is DO NOT STEAL commendment, so they don't know software might be shared...

    You mean if they made incompatible TCP and released changes to the world everybody would change to their version?

    Nope - every their incompatibility would be classified as bug and users might sue Microsoft.

    Yeah, someone ripped the entire wireless layer out of (free?)bsd kernel and put it into a driver for linux. Check out the madwifi drivers ;)

    Well, Sam Leffler wrote it (ath in BSD and madwifi in linux), it's just the same driver for different kernels.

    Are we talking about the same things? Production level means, multitrack recording, effects, audio mixing and editing, mastering, the sort of application space that's dominated by Digi/ProTools, Seinberg/Nuendo, Digital Performer, that sort of thing.

    Oh, come on, you are saying about applications. It should not be much difference which Unix to use for running such applications.

    The entire point of pico (and therefore nano) is to never be complex enough to require a menu or anything graphical. It's a nice, small, simple text editor.

    Are you sure you are not describing The Vi?

    You are perfectly free to re-license BSD code under whatever terms you want and in fact this is exactly what people do when then sell closed-source software based on BSD.

    You can't re-license BSD code - it's like claiming it's yours, right? But you can do whatever you want with derived work. Derived work does not include code you borrowing with BSD license.

    Looks like you are mixing derived work and original work.

    Linux certainly predates FreeBSD, and while Bill Jolitz' work on 386BSD predates Linus' first efforts on Linux, even 386BSD first release was as late as march '92.

    386BSD and FreeBSD were just the i386 ports
    of BSD. And BSD 1.0 came out on March 9 1978. ;-)
    Linux 1.0 came out on March 14 1994.

    It's equivalent to buying the Chinese product for $2 and then just paying $6 for the US worker to do nothing. Better idea: encourage the US company and workers to either become more efficient, or find another business.

    Let's assume both workers efficiency is same. Chinese one would work for $2 per hour and american would not. And it is not because american worker is picky - he/she just do not want to starve. One of reasons is because China is keeping yuan exchange rate too low. Keeping exchange rate low means keeping salaries low. Then it's easy to talk about free trade which helps China to build industry.

    You want to see what happens when a nation cuts itself off from world trade, go take a look at North Korea.

    Ohh, you have no idea...
    North Korea biggest partner is China. There are other partners like Japan and South Korea. North Korea problem is socialistic economy and government control over prices and spendings.

    Of course, they are well within their rights to say that modifying the software will void their warranty, but they can't forbid you to modify the software, and they shouldn't rig the system so that it intentionally fails if the software is modified.

    How do you think - do they want their customer support to help cusomers who botched their software? Like somebody compiled software with wrong libraries, wrong flags, wrong compiler version etc.. And there is no installation procedure, is it?

    BTW everyone is free to violate spirit of the GPL. GPL is about a freedom, right? ;)))

    In such an "open competitive" market, the GPL would be vastly preferred to BSD and similar by companies (for their own source code, that is - for importing code, it doesn't matter, but at least then they have the choice of using GPL code as a basis for their own if they're already planning on releasing their code as GPL). If they decide to release source code because there's a market demand for that, they don't want a competitor to come out with a closed-but-cheap product based on their work. The GPL forces a level playing field for all competitors, allowing the companies to be open and the customers to gain the advantage. Now companies compete on the basis of service and quality. Only shoddy companies should oppose that.

    You are daydreaming. Companies release software under open software license only if it does not relate to it's business. Opening software to it's competitors - it's business suicide.

    How about cheapier (they don't hire programmers) competitor product based on your open source product?

    And it's a wishful thinking about competition based on service and quality. You've forgotten about price. There is a lot of cheap junk... That's why Wallmart and fast food franchises are succesfull.

    Exactly. The thing I've always wondered about is why all these companies aren't using *BSD for their OS. There's lots of support for embedded BSD and it makes this whole GPL problem go away.

    The answer is simple - if there is no MMU in processor - you can't use BSD.
    And there are companies that use BSD - there is no reason to slashdot them..

    What loophole? To me that sounds exactly like the "loophole" media industry is hitting consumers with stupid DRMs and subpoenas to p2p users. Consider it a balance.

    You are forgetting about performers. They usually earn about $1 per sold CD. It is less or around 10% of CD price. p2p users harm performers in the first place... There is no balance.

    NetBSD is now the fastest BSD of all. It is much faster than FreeBSD according to every benchmark.

    Your link does not support your words.NetbSD is not "much" faster. And it's not faster in all benchmarks.

    BTW benchmarks were done on uniprocessor box.
    FreeBSD put a lot of resources to have fine-grained SMP kernel. And SMP benchmark would show different results.

    The pages are outdated, archaic and written in a way that takes too much time to find out anything useful and of course teh few existign exampels vaailable in Unix and Linux documentation are totally irrelevant.

    It's Linux experience - try FreeBSD - you'll find meaningful man pages.

    Word communism has a lot of meanings - it's form of society or ideology or political movement.
    So far there were no country with communism society. There were bunch of countries with communist government - all of them were not democratic. They were in theory democratic but reality was quit different.

    So far history showed no democracy associated with communism. BTW I didn't say communism is "the opposite to democracy". Those countries were communists ruled (and rule now) had their own version of democracy which is ridiculuos.

    You said "America want you to think that" - this does not make any sense. America is not just one person - there are millions of persons who want some different things. Of course they don't care what me or you think.

    BTW you should know insults are not arguments.
