    guns plus bullets plus teflon coatings mean going to a lot of extra trouble to preferentially kill people with protective vests.

    Teflon doesn't help penetrate vests - that's what steel bullets are for. The point of teflon is to reduce wear on the gun barrel.

    HELL NO! We'd nuke their sorry asses (bomb and all) out of existence before we allowed a credible threat to US soil. Geez, what do we look like over here? Children who are afraid of being spanked with a rod? Hell, I'd be the first in line to sign up for war if we had a real nuclear threat pointed our way!

    Pack your bags - N Korea has a nuke or three and the missiles to send them as far as Seattle. Did we invade them? No, we went after a third world pissant who was stabilizing his country.

    My main beef is with people who run around in SUVs with no real reason and those who buy H2s (8 mpg - WTF?). I'm not calling for a ban, but I don consider it to be wasteful. I'd also like for the SUV taxbreak to go away. As for my car, I wager that you could fit in it just fine (unless you have a long trunk), but you'd hate getting into it.

    According to this, the H2 has the same transmission as the Corvette and S10, and only one set of ratios is listed. Where's that Class 4 Corvette hitch?

    I'm jealous. I want to get a supercharger for my car, I've just never been willing to lay out $4k for one.

    Luxury. I drive a MR2 Spyder, and the full treatment runs around $12k. Of course, that buys 250bhp with upgraded suspension and wheels.

    It is. Most people would be just fine in a regular car. Minivans are good for carrying 5 or 6 people, but I guess they aren't cool enough.

    I have been car shopping for a while and while I would love gas mileage over 30mpg even on the highway, it is just nearly impossible to find a comfortable car that I feel safe in.

    I'm 5'10", 200lbs, and I like my MR2 just fine.

    You would probably see traffic accidents go down because its next to impossible to talk on a cell phone while driving a car with a stick shift.

    That's easy: put the phone in your right hand. When it's time to shift, palm the phone and shift. If the other guy said something that you missed, say 'huh?'.

    The H2 is AWD geared so it can tow its own weight.

    This doesn't make any sense. AWD improves traction while raising the driveline losses to around 20%.

    You can't reasonable compare their respective power to weight ratios - even forgetting that the 4 cylinder Accord is plenty fast - without taking those differences into account.

    The accord is a V6, but if you want to compare a AWD car, try the Subaru WRX - AWD, 227Hp, and 22MPG. I think it's rated for a class 1 hitch, mostly due to frame issues.

    Nah, if Kerry gets elected, then congress will oppose everything he does on principal. If nothing gets done for a year, would that be so bad?

    A sensible restriction would be self-classification of pornographers into a .XXX TLD, with jail time and other punishments only for those who attempt to sneak into .COM and others. This would allow respectable ISPs such as AOL to block all pornographers simply by blocking .XXX, and put those silly and ineffective filter software vendors out of business for good.

    The fun part is when that law gets used against a site that sells skimpy bikinis or promotes nude resorts. I'm sure those places won't consider themselves pron.

    So, if you have 2^128 addresses, there isn't enough RAM on the planet to implement a full table, and you have to start compressing it, slowing things way down, or alternatively, you have to implement CAM (content addressible memory). This is a whole new chipset in either case. Yuck!

    Not even close. You aggregate by 16 bit chunk and only bother with the first 2 or 3 chunks in the core. You still have around 50k entries in the core tables (maybe less), but each entry accounts for more addresses. In addition, you currently only do one lookup per connection, then store the result somewhere. Thereafter, you look it up based in its 'flow number' and send it wherever that entry says it should go.

    If you want to use the phone anology the IP == the phone number

    IP is more like the circuit ID that the phone company uses to route your calls. IPs are inherently local, whereas you can mostly hang a phone number anywhere.

    o? Take your USB port that shines from the front of the PC. Nice and inviting, provides a few W of power and a pair of data lines... now jam your finger in it. Can't do it, can you? What happens if you short out the power lines? There's a fuse on the motherboard. What happens if a device isn't wired up correctly? The OS doesn't even get a chance to see it.

    Now treat it like software: hang a space heater off of it and complain that it doesn't work. Allocate 3 weeks for design and implementation. Testing is for the weak. Add a SOAP interface (don't change the deadline). Oh, did we mention that motherboard X doesn't want to use our pinout? Make it work somehow.

    That being the case, why leave it in the API set when there are safe alternatives?

    So you don't break existing code. Also, gets() is part of the standard API - if you left it out, your customers will complain that you aren't adhering to the standard API.

    if everyone just donated a small portion of their income, something they wouldn't even miss, you could pretty much wipe out worldwide hunger.

    That's just naive. The problem isn't that we don't send enough food for people to eat. the problem is that local warlords use the food as a means of control. African hunger will never be solved until the political side is addressed, just like Africa will not be united until its people stop killing each other.

    If these "smart" systems happen to be running *NIX, then practially 90% of maintenance can be done remotely. So it doesn't matter whether admin is located in room next to server room or half way across the globe.

    Most likely, the supply of qualified admins is already in use, so I don't see outsourcing to be a serious problem.

    May I remind you that the topic is "Senate Unanimously Passes Anti-Camcorder Bill". And that will have no effect on screener copies, unless it's attached to that bill (it well may be, I haven't the stomach to wade through the legalese).

    So, basically, the only effect will be that somebody will be charged with a felony for possessing a camcorder in his backpack while on vacation. The impact on piracy will be nil.

    The discussion took a slight turn when we started talking about wide distribution. Camcorder rips are roundly reviled as the substandard pieces of crap they are. By making them the subject of criminal law, we will hopefully achieve a higher grade of bootleg movies.
