Never ever ever EVER. OS X will NEVER run on any machine that was not manufactured by Apple. Never. Forget it. Even if Apple DID switch to x86 chips, they would still use a proprietary boot module that X would require to run. So OS X would still not run on a Gateway or a Dell... dude.

Nope. Not at all. OS 9 has the same level of protection for itself that OS X does, it just works a bit differently. Tell your friends to try this... In OS 9, drag your System Folder to the trash. Go on, do it. Whupps - you can't. Why? Because you don't have 'permission' to. You can only do it if you boot from a different source, like a CD or another volume. Unix does this far better than OS 9 could, but it's basically the same idea. Logging in as ROOT lets you do anything you want. Toss your kernel? SURE!!! No problem! BAD idea. I feel that if someone doesn't know why they shouldn't be root, that alone is reason enough for them NOT to be.

Well put. Again, I will say it for the rest of you... Never EVER EVER. If you want to use OS X, you will now and forever be required to buy a machine manufactured by Apple. Period. Name one other hardware company that survived by making hardware and licensed software - ....waiting......waiting.... Apple would loose control of the integration, and that is the whole point of owning a Mac. NEVER.

Actually, more accuately, Darwin is indeed an OS. It's the flavour of UNIX that OS X uses, but it does not include a GUI or a lot of the other features that make up a full blown OS X. Darwin will run and Intel machine, but OS X, as you said, is much more than Darwin. OS X will never EVER EVVVVVEERRRRRR be available for Intel based PC's. Even if Apple started using Intel chips tomorrow, there would still be firmware and ROMs that made it possilbe to run X only on Apple hardware. Let me say that again... NEVER EVER EVER. They say never say never... I'm sayin' never.
