  1. Indirectly Good on Comcast in Court, AT&T Gets Greedy · · Score: 1

Actually this indirectly could be a good thing. The reason a number of Broadband alternatives such as Wireless, Various DSL alternatives and Sprint Ion went under was their cost of delivery was higher than the market would pay. So if AT&T drives the price up more competitors will enter the market which at some point will drive the price down again and stay do to competition hopefully after they've amortized their startup costs and then can afford to drop prices and stay in biz.

Most large companies I've worked for in the past will really only provide employment verfication, i.e. Dates of Employment and final salary and maybe position title/grade. In fact one now makes the person requesting the information has to call a 900 # for a couple of them and pay a fee.

  6. Are ads self defeating? on End of the Free Internet · · Score: 1

Numerous net studies have shown that much of those eyeballs advertisers want surf the net sometime during the work day. But there is typically a need to be a bit discreet at work. If I'm on some site, I used to be able to click my "home" button and return to the company website in a flash. With all these stupid pop windows, I can't even close out the browser quickly unless (in Windoze) I kill the entire browser task. Hence I use the net (other others) less frequently actually declining the base for the ads viewers. Also I think most people will accept ads to a certain point, but when they get truly annoying (i.e. it takes me too much work to get to the content or the adds constantly interrupt my content) I'll either switch sites and potentially actively avoid the sponsors product.

  7. Gaming Commission on Are Spreadsheets Software or Data? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'll stay away from the tech aspects of this, but lookin into the positives. As one who lives in Nevada, the State Gaming Commission here is very paranoid about anything that goes on to make sure things stay fair and legal, they even regulate the chips that go inside Slot Machines. What happens if something in your spreadsheets would allow bingo operators to skim money (gameing is permitted for the tax revenues it generates not so you can have fun), or lie about the percentage of funds being returned to players as prizes (something you might want to know about). Just the opposite, by having a registered known working version they can than compare the version in use by someone running bingo games. If they find a discrepency they can use that to prosecute or at least start an audit. Part of it may be to insure your stuff doesn't deviate from accepted accounting practices. On the positive side if you sign up your become an authorized vendor giving you an edge over some other newbie !
