But the South Australian Government is under an outsourcing agreement with EDS for all of their IT!
Under the agreement, it doesn't matter what the Government wants, they eat what they are fed.
Personally, having seen it from the inside, EDS are not big supporters/promoters of OSS. Why? Because when you collect $$s for every support call you take and for every server you have to support, you don't necessarily want things...
Ahh... preeching... converted...
The other thing is that even if EDS embraced OSS, the development of various pieces of software would more than likely not be performed by local companies/professionals.
The problem here is that the ADSL service is set to provide each subscriber with up to 8Mbps/1Mbps transfer speeds.
In.au we don't see those kinda speeds without selling off first-born children.
So a standard ADSL service (8/1) over the Telstra copper will only really be good for up to 3.5kms. As you break that distance, the transmission speeds falls off drastically.
Because he was subscribed with a 256K or maybe a 512K service, the transmission speed is adequate. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they can't push it out to 10kms! But they can't do 8/1 at that range.
OK, no problem... "nobody would ever need more than 640K of RAM". The reason they won't do it is that when the Next Big Thing comes along, they'll want to use up that extra bandwidth.
You don't want to trap yourself now for the future. You'll end up with a "new enhancement" for all ADSL subscribers that only 50% of them can use - the other 50% think "class action".
An interesting stance on the use of screens.
Any screen that is able to be seen by the driver (direct view or not) is illegal here in Australia.
It's the law for car stereo installers here to wire in the cable that prevents the display of movies/tv unless the park/emergency brake is on.
Of course, it's a simple matter to earth that connector so that it's always on, but no car audio shop will do it for you.
On the other hand, why doesn't this guiys show any pics of his xbox install? We didn't really need to see 16 pics of the screen!
From the coments I've read, most of you seem to think that you will be competing against Beowulf with Win2K.
This is not that case - you need to be running DataCenter in order to have more than 2 hosts in the cluster.
OK, say you want only 2 hosts in the cluster... you still need to have Win2K Advanced Server (cha-ching!)... and THEN, not all apps will run active-active, some are still bound to active-passive rules.
Add to that, your CALs and whatever commercial software you run on it... They don't miss a beat when it comes to licensing.
Also, Satan will be stocking up on thermals when DataCenter or Advanced Server is capable of running on lower-end hardware that Linux is capable of.
