ok, some useful info on corn that i may not have exactly right, so any farmers (or Iowans) out there feel free to clarify. corn, as grown for food, is sterile. you can't plant your leftover food corn. in order to be used for "seed corn", it must be painstakingly hand-fertilized (i.e., tie off the tassels with a paper bag then collect the stuff & redistribute, inseminating the poor celibate plants) this is the result of centuries of genetic engineering the slow way. the kind of corn we eat could not reproduce in the wild without human intervention, i.e. farmers must buy new seed from people who do corn sex.
this could replace or be used in addition to [meta]moderation: "[un]endorsement" buttons for replies - eliminates "i agree" or "i disagree" replies, the parent post would then list "endorsed by [slashdot handles foo, bar, and baz] and [n] ACs, opposed by [etc. etc.]" anyone could choose to show or hide endorsements, including moderators. i wouldn't recommend having posts sortable by endorsements.
is not because it's more correct, but because it makes the math nice. and it turns out, the things that we do with that nice math seem to have pretty accurate results. for instance, my data has sufficient outliers that an exponential distribution would probably model them better, but using a gaussion distribution means i can use easy math to get answers that agree with my data to experimental uncertainty, and i'm not going to spend any time making a more precise model that won't get me any improvement in my results (my data was all taken long ago, so the experimental uncertainty is fixed)
Actually, I use my web mail account for things i don't want traced back to me. Although I entered my correct sign up info, the security is so lax, i don't think an assertion that mail was actually read by/ sent by me could hold up in court.

DoS against the Windows machine is encouraged because it camplies with the stated objective of the "contest" - to stress-test the machine. DoS against the Linux machine is discouraged because it does not comply with the objective - to break into the machine. Ok, so that was sort of weak because Microsoft only asked us to stress test it in a specific way which did not include DoS, but my next point is better. DoS against the Linux machine impedes the ability of others to attack it, and thereby reduces their ability to get a free machine. DoS against the Windows machine impedes the ability of others to attack it, and thereby reduces the amount of free testing Microsoft gets (of the kind it wants). If the cracker's aim is not to work for Microsoft for free, he or she should aim DoS attacks against the Windows machine, but not against the Linux machine.

Have you ever depended on public libraries for net access? It sucks. It's slow, and you have to sign up 2 hours in advance for a 30 min. slot. In addition, the typical (windaws) setup is completely non-secure (i.e., the subsequent user can read all your email). Talk about discouraging voting, this would effectively disenfranchise the poor.
Wired was just negroponte's wet dream. I remember the day i first saw it for sale at a newsstand. I said "people _buy_ this rag?" (there had been copies laying around the house brought home by meda lab lackeys.)
